|Interview by Burt Wolf with Mike May, bassist for ABOMINANT.
Interview done March 26th, 2007.
ABOMINANT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME, BUT COULD YOU GIVE A SHORT
HISTORY OF THE BAND UP TO NOW?
We got together in 1993. We did 2 demos & 7 albums & here we are today. Lots of shows, women & beer in
between, but because of legal issues, those stories will probably only get told south of the border.
WHY WAS THE NAME ABOMINANT CHOSEN AS THE BANDS NAME?
Because we thought it was cool..., man were we wrong...
WHO OR WHAT HAS HELPED IMPACT YOUR LIFE & MUSICAL STYLE?
Many many bands, more so than individuals. I'd say mainly early Death Metal bands & Thrash mongers like
KREATOR, DARK ANGEL, POSSESSED, etc. But also newer bands like ZYKLON, ANGELCORPSE,
INCANTATION & so on... Let's face it, we are still being influenced & probably always will, but I do believe
we have come up with the core ABOMINANT sound & our own individuality. We do take influences from all
forms of Metal, mix them up with a case of beer & vomit them forth on to the musical landscape that tries to
HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE SOUNDS OF ABOMINANT?
I'd say mostly chaotic Death Metal with tinges of Black, Thrash & Traditional Heavy Metal...what do you think?
YOUR NEW CD "TRIUMPH OF THE KILL" WAS RELEASED LAST YEAR. HOW HAS THE
RESPONSE BEEN TO IT?
Everyone seems to be enjoying it. Lots of people say it's our best, but that always happens. I'm particularly proud
of it, being our first album with Jim & also a partial return to much older ABOMINANT style. The last album
"CONQUEST" was probably the most Thrash album we've ever done & also had some Traditional Heavy Metal
vocals on there, which I'm very proud of, but it's nice to get back to the dirty underground sound that we started
DEATHGASM RECORDS RELEASED THIS CD AS WELL AS A FEW OF YOUR PAST RELEASES.
HOW DID YOU GET HOOKED UP WITH THEM & HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH THEM?
It's been good. I'd been in contact with Evan since before even starting ABOMINANT & he always was real
supportive. I think we've both grown a lot since our relationship started. Now Evan is putting out a lot of releases
that kick ass like SEMARGL, MANTICORE, OCCIDENS & so on.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE COVER ARTWORK A BIT & IT'S MEANING?
I like to leave that up to the individual. Mainly again, we just thought it looked cool...I think we were right this
WHAT IS SOME OF THE LYRICAL CONTENT IN YOUR SONGS & WHO WRITES THE MAJORITY
OF THE MUSIC?
Timmie has written probably 80% of the music over the years, with Buck & I making up the rest. I mean we all
have our says & usually I'm sure the songs turn out quite different than Timmie started it. Timmie also probably
writes about 1/2 of our lyrics, which I think Mike Barnes appreciates his help. I imagine they try to mix up
subject matter as much as possible, but I'd say war, death, hate & darkness sum up their moods...
YOU GUYS HAVE PLAYED A LOT OF SHOWS OVER THE YEARS. WHO ARE SOME OF THE
BANDS YOU'VE SHARED THE STAGE WITH & WHERE?
We've been pretty lucky, getting to play with bands I respect like NUNSLAUGHTER, DECEASED, MASTER,
GARDEN OF SHADOWS, SUMMON, FOG, ESTUARY & other underground dwellers, as well as bigger
bands like IMMOLATION, SUFFOCATION, GOATWHORE, MONSTROSITY...but now I'm getting bored
of talking about other bands than ABOMINANT.
ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING OR FUNNY BAND STORIES YOU COULD SHARE WITH US?
Told you earlier, those are classified.
HOW DO YOU FEEL THE BAND HAS CHANGED OR PROGRESSED OVER ALL THESE YEARS?
Hopefully not much...mooohahahaha! No, we've really grown closer & got to be better musicians & song writers
over the years. A lot of our earlier stuff was brutal but kinda faceless. Now it's brutal & has an ugly face!
HOW DO YOU THINK THE UNDERGROUND SCENE HAS CHANGED SINCE YOU GUYS STARTED
As much as I love the underground & the people in it, it really is pretty trendy as well. A lot of people just get
sucked into one style & slag on the others. That's not only not supportive, but extremely boring to me. Actually,
it's about the same as ever, but mainly all connected to the internet now, which makes it easier. I miss the old
cult days of mailboxes full of ads & demos, but really the internet makes it a lot easier as far as contacting people
& getting music out. There are still great bands coming out now & some old fuckers like us keeping the spirit
burning as well.
ARE YOU INTO ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC BESIDES WHAT YOU PLAY? WHO ARE SOME
OF THE BANDS YOUR CURRENTLY INTO?
I mainly listen to old Heavy Metal & Thrash, but I've been listening to a lot of Black/Death stuff lately like
INFERNAL WAR, THUNDERBOLT, DISASTER, PENTACLE, BLOODTHORN, IN AETERNUM, THE
CHASM & as always the real fucked up dirty stuff like AUTOPSY, SODOM, INCANTATION, GRAND
BELIALS KEY, HELLHAMMER, etc. Lots of MANOWAR & MOTORHEAD too...
WHAT DO THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND DO WHEN NOT
DOING ANY WORK FOR ABOMINANT?
All of us except Jim have families, so that kind of stuff, movies, video
games, pretty much the same stuff every stiff does to keep from killing
them self. Lots of drinking...lifting weights, shooting guns, working on
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK PEOPLE WOULD BE
SURPRISED TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?
I'm really into old 70's Pop Rock like FLEETWOOD MAC, JOURNEY,
THE POLICE, HEART, BILLY SQUIRE...all that shit...also a huge
STAR WARS geek...
WHAT WAS THE FIRST ALBUM YOU BOUGHT? WHAT WAS
THE FIRST CONCERT YOU EVER WENT TO?
Well, I think the first album ever was either K-TEL GOOFY GREATS or PAC-MAN FEVER, but the answer you
want is KISS "DOUBLE PLATINUM". My first Metal concert was IRON MAIDEN on the "POWERSLAVE"
tour with ACCEPT at Red Rocks, still one of the best too!
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE NEXT FROM ABOMINANT?
We are working on our 8th album which will be the first exclusively written with Jim on drums. Turning out to
be our fastest & most chaotic yet...
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE ANSWERING THIS INTERVIEW? WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW
THAT IT'S DONE?
I put my son to bed & was watching KILL BILL VOL. 2. Now, I'm gonna go get a Guinness, watch a little
ADULT SWIM & hopefully fuck the goat shit out of my old lady. How about you...
THANX FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS. FEEL FREE TO INCLUDE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D
LIKE TO CLOSE OUT!
Just thanx to you Burt for including us in your zine!
