Interview by Burt Wolf with Eric Cargile, bassist for BLOODLINED CALLIGRAPHY.
Interview done October 13th, 2006
CAN YOU PLEASE GIVE A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BAND & HOW YOU GOT TOGETHER? ANY PREVIOUS BANDS MEMBERS WERE IN BEFORE?
This is really, really brief. We started 10 years ago as a different band. It was me & our former drummer. Like most bands we have had a million line up changes & now we are to where we are today. But basically me & our old drummer started the band & that's how everything popped off. Our drummer Robby used to be in a band called
LET IT DIE. That's pretty much it. The rest of us have never been in any other bands that ever did anything at all.
WHY WAS THE NAME BLOODLINED CALLIGRAPHY CHOSEN AS THE BANDS NAME?
We picked the name
BLOODLINED CALLIGRAPHY because we had to change our old band name, which was FRICTION, to avoid getting sued. Honestly, it just sounded the best out of anything that we were coming up with at the time.

WHO OR WHAT HAS HELPED INFLUENCE YOU IN LIFE IN GENERAL & IN MUSIC?
That's a tough question. There's probably a million answers to that. I could take up the whole interview just answering that question. I honestly don't have a difinitive answer for that. I'm sorry. That's just a really, really broad question. haha

HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE STYLE & SOUND OF BLOODLINED CALLIGRAPHY?
Old Thrash, mixed with late 90's Hardcore with a lot of mosh. That's pretty much the sound we are always going for.

I CAN HEAR A LOT OF THRASH & NEW HARDCORE ELEMENTS ALL THROUGH OUT YOUR SOUND. WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS IN THESE GENRES THAT HAVE HAD AN IMPACT ON YOUR STYLE & SOUND?
Old
METALLICA, EXODUS, HATEBREED, SNAPCASE. All these bands have had huge impacts on us as a band. If it wasn't for these bands there would be no BLOODLINED CALLIGRAPHY.

YOUR NEW ALBUM "YPSILANTI" HAS BEEN OUT FOR ABOUT A MONTH NOW. HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN SO FAR?
The response has been really, really good. Hopefully it continues that way. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you love something & you let the world hear it & a lot of them love it too. It makes you feel really accomplished.

THIS ALBUM WAS PUT OUT BY FACEDOWN RECORDS. HOW DID YOU GET HOOKED UP WITH THEM & HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH THEM?
It's been awesome working with
FACEDOWN. We are going through some rough times right now & they are sticking by us 100%. We got hooked up with FACEDOWN by basically playing a show & Jason from FACEDOWN being there & liking what he heard & saw & the rest as they say, is history.
WHY DID YOU NAME THE ALBUM AFTER THE TOWN IN MICHIGAN WHERE YOU GUYS ARE FROM?
Because we LOVE where we come from. It's so easy to just say we are from Detroit because it's a big city, but that's not where we are from. We are from Ypsilanti & we are proud of it. So we figured it was time to let the world know what was up. HaHa.

WHO DOES THE MAJORITY OF THE WRITING IN THE BAND OR IS IT A WHOLE BAND COLLABORATION?
Ryan & I do 95% of all the writing. Music, lyrics, vocal patterns, you name it, we do it. Very rarely do we ever or have we ever had a full band collaboration on anything for the past 2 records.
WHAT IS SOME OF THE LYRICAL CONTENT IN YOUR SONGS? WHICH SONG OFF THE NEW ALBUM IS YOUR FAVORITE & WHY?
The songs on the new album deal a lot with coping with loss. The songs go from that to dealing with fake friends & just learning to stand up for yourself in the world & figuring out what your beliefs are. My favorite song musically is "Take It Or Leave It", because it's just fast & brutal. My favorite song lyrically is "Frienemies", because it's literally the story of my life.

HOW DOES THIS ALBUM DIFFER FROM YOUR PAST TWO RELEASES "THEY WANT YOU SILENT" & "THE BEGINNING OF THE END"?
It's just better. It's more focused. The song structures are better. It's a lot more catchy. The EP was old songs redone just to get something out to tour off of. "THEY WANT YOU SILENT" was a lot different from the EP, but it was still the beginning of the sound we were going for. We had just started experimenting with more Thrash style stuff. The new record though, I feel like we have found our niche. It's not the best
BLOODLINED CALLIGRAPHY record ever, because we aren't done making records & hopefully we won't be for a long time. But it is the best record so far.

IS THERE A TOUR ALREADY PLANNED FOR THIS ALBUM? IF SO, WHERE & WITH WHO?
We are out right now with
SWORN ENEMY. Then we go directly off this to being out with 36 CRAZY FISTS. After that we don't know, but we will pretty much be out all year.

YOU'VE PLAYED A LOT OF FESTIVALS IN THE PAST. WHAT WERE SOME OF THOSE FESTIVALS & WHO WERE SOME OF THE BANDS ON THESE SHOWS?
We've played with a ton of bands at fests. Some of the bigger bands we have played with at fests have been
ZAO, P.O.D., SWITCHFOOT, EVERY TIME I DIE, BLACK DAHLIA MURDER & WALLS OF JERICHO.
ARE THERE ANY COOL, FUNNY OR INTERESTING BAND STORIES YOU COULD SHARE WITH US?
We are the most boring band in the world, really. The most interesting things about us are, our tour managers name is The Birdman & our drummer will only answer to the names Panther or King Panther. HaHa.
WHAT DO THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND DO WHEN NOT DOING ANY WORK FOR THE BAND? HOBBIES, JOBS, ETC?
We just work lame jobs to get by until it's time to go back on the road. We work what ever jobs we can get to cover our bills & that will still let us have time off if a show comes to us. But then we all just end up quiting them as soon as a tour comes up.

ARE YOU INTO ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC BESIDES WHAT YOU PLAY? WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU HAVE BEEN CURRENTLY LISTENING TO?
Yeah, I'm really into melodic, kinda Indie Rock stuff. Some of the bands I'm listening to like that are
MEG & DIA, AMBULETTE, DENALI. I been listening to a lot of PINK FLOYD lately also. And I can never forget the lasrge quantities of SLIPKNOT & STONE SOUR that I listen to. I LOVE both of those bands. They are SO good.

SINCE YOU GUYS ARE FROM MICHIGAN, WHO DO YOU FEEL ARE SOME OF THE BETTER BANDS, LABELS, ETC FROM YOUR HOME STATE?
My favorite bands from Michigan are
WALLS OF JERICHO, HOPE FOR AUGUST & ANATHALLO. I love a lot of awesome bands from here, but I just had to go with my favorites. The scene around here is getting stronger & stronger. I'm really excited about that.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE NEXT FROM BLOODLINED CALLIGRAPHY?
Lots of touring. That's pretty much all we have planned for the next year & a half. Then after that it will be time to write another record. But before that lots & lots of touring.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE ANSWERING THIS INTERVIEW? WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW THAT IT'S DONE?
I was watching a basketball game. Getting ready for bed. Now that I'm done I will go to bed & wake up in 3 hours to drive to Kentucky for a show on the tour.

THANX A LOT FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ANSWER THIS INTERVIEW. FEEL FREE TO ADD ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO CLOSE OUT!
