Interview by Burt Wolf with Peter Hasselbrack, vocalist, guitarist & bassist for BLOODSOAKED!
Interview done on April 2nd, 2015.
BLOODSOAKED IS YOUR ONE MAN WRECKING CREW AND YOU HAVE BEEN AT THIS FOR
NEARLY 10 YEARS NOW, BUT CAN YOU GIVE A BRIEF HISTORY OF BLOODSOAKED?
BLOODSOAKED started in late 2005 with me wanting to get back into playing with other people.  I had played in
a Thrash band (
DESLOK) back in Boston in the late 80's and always had a guitar I would jam on once in a while.
I started off looking to make
BLOODSOAKED a full band but could never find members that had the same vision
and /or drive as I did. Not being able to find members I started off as just a studio project releasing an album
("BRUTALLY BUTCHERED") and shit just exploded from there...

I KNOW THAT BLOODSOAKED WAS TAKEN FROM YOUR DISTRIBUTION NAME, BUT WHY WAS
THE NAME BLOODSOAKED ORIGINALLY CHOSEN AS THE DISTRIBUTION & BANDS NAMES?
Yes. BLOODSOAKED was taken from the online promotion web site I ran from 1995 till 2004 called
BLOODSOAKED PROMOTIONS as well as BLOODSOAKED RECORDS from 2001 to 2004. When I started
the web site it was called
THE INTENSE SOUNDS OF DEATH METAL.  I was doing more than just Death
Metal and needed a new name, I was talking to my friend Rich from the old
LOST DISCIPLE RECORDS and he
came up with
BLOOD DRENCHED and it triggered BLOODSOAKED and it happened in a matter of minutes.
So when I started the band I still had the
BLOODSOAKED logo and it was a perfect fit for the band so Blam-o,
BLOODSOAKED the band.
BLOODSOAKED HAS BEEN A BIG PART OF THE UNDERGROUND SCENE AND INFLUENCED A
SLEW OF BANDS, BUT WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Mine are mostly Old School bands from when I was a kid such as OBITUARY, PESTILENCE, MALEVOLENT
CREATION, DEICIDE
and SEPULTURA.  Just straight forward Death Metal.

HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE STYLE AND SOUND OF BLOODSOAKED?
100% Pure Death Metal.  Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing fancy, just catchy Death Metal with chorus's
people can sing / growl along to.  I always liked a cool chorus and always try to incorporate that into my songs.  I
also try and write a good song and not just throw 10-15 riffs together and hope for the best.  My songs might
sound simple but I do put a lot of thought into the song writing process.

YOU DO EVERYTHING IN THE BAND, CAN YOU TELL US EVERYTHING YOU DO AND A LITTLE
BIT OF YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
I play everything but the drums, they are programmed by Shane McFee and have been since my last three albums.
My creative process huh.....?  I usually start out with a beginning or the chorus of the song and build from there.
If I write a riff I like I'll record it so not to forget and slowly build from there. Sometimes a song will come
together quick and other times it will take weeks or months. I put a lot of thought into how the song will sound
from beginning to end. I have jammed with Brent Williams (Drummer from
ATROCIOUS ABNORMALITY) for
the last few albums to help with the song writing process. We had some arguments and great times and in the end
the songs were brought to a new level each time. We worked very well together with a bit of push and shove
from each of us. Sometimes working with others can and will open your mind to new ideas.

WHAT IS SOME OF THE LYRICAL CONTENT IN YOUR SONGS?
Lyrical content is the normal gore and anti-religious topics from the first album to the latest, nothing has changed
there.

YOU HAVE HAD SOME OTHER MUSICIANS YOU'VE COLLABORATED WITH OVER THE YEARS.
WHO WERE SOME OF THESE MUSICIANS?
Brent Williams (Drummer from ATROCIOUS ABNORMALITY) for the most part and I had a guitarist / vocalist
for 2 years of so (Joseph from
MALEBOLGIA).  Joseph did a few Europe tours with me as well as a few one
off festivals.  Joseph added a lot to the live shows that I can't match alone.  Joseph left about a year ago so it's
been back to just me now.
YOUR NEWEST RELEASE IS "RELIGIOUS
APOCALYPSE" WHICH CAME OUT LAST YEAR.
HOW WELL HAS IT BEEN DOING SO FAR?
Honestly the reviews have been mixed as there are only 3
new songs, 2 Glam covers and 4-5 live songs.  People seem
to really like the new songs, either love or hate the Glam
covers and as with most live songs people could care less.  I
wanted to do a full 8 Glam covers along with the 3 new
songs but
COMATOSE did not want to release it so this is
what we agreed upon.  I personally believe the new songs on
the new album are some of the best stuff I have put out.
Three completely different songs from one another but still
with the
BLOODSOAKED feel.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COVER A CINDERELLA
& RATT SONG ON THE ALBUM? (KILLER COVERS
BY THE WAY)
I've been a Glam Metal fan forever and love it just as much
as I do Death Metal.  I always wanted to do some cover
songs.  Rich from
LOST DISCIPLE RECORDS and I have
talked about it for many years as we have been friends since
the late 80s. The two songs I did are a bit heavier than most
Glam songs and lend themselves to Death Metal.  I loved
doing them and I'm very happy with the final result.
THIS ALBUM WAS PUT OUT BY THE GREAT COMATOSE MUSIC. HOW DID YOU GET HOOKED UP
WITH THEM AND HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH THEM?
I've known Steve and COMATOSE MUSIC for many years before BLOODSOAKED the band. I did a lot of
promotion for his label back in the day with
BLOODSOAKED PROMOTIONS and then did lots of trades during
the
BLOODSOAKED RECORDS days. I released my first album to 100 CDs and COMATOSE liked it and
wanted to release it.  We have worked together on all 4
BLOODSOAKED albums and COMATOSE has always
supported me.  They are one of the best labels in the underground scene today.

YOU HAVE PUT ALL OF YOUR RELEASES FOR FREE DOWNLOAD ON YOUR WEBSITE (THANK
YOU FOR THAT BECAUSE I ONLY HAD TWO OF YOUR RELEASES). WHY THE DECISION TO GIVE
THEM AWAY FOR FREE?
I never cared about making money with BLOODSOAKED and want as many people to hear my music as
possible.  When I did my last deal with
COMATOSE I took less money and in return COMATOSE agreed to let
me offer all four albums as a free download 6 months after the latest release. I figure the more people listening
would mean more and more fans and more of other merch bought such as shirts, hats, stickers and so on. Hoping
that people will spread the word about the free music and more and more people will listen and become fans.

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE PROGRESSES SINCE YOUR FIRST RELEASE "BRUTALLY
BUTCHERED" TO YOUR NEWEST RELEASE "RELIGIOUS APOCALYPSE"?
I would say I'm a much better song writer in general since the first album but honestly I have not changed to
much of how the music is.  I always wanted
BLOODSOAKED to be a simple Death Metal band and while I
might have thrown in a little bit of technical stuff here or there in a song for the most part it's still simple straight
forward Death Metal.  The recordings have gotten better as well as the song structure but that's about it.
YOUR WEBSITE ALSO MENTIONED THAT
YOU JUST PLAYED YOUR LAST U.S.
SHOW ON MARCH 28TH. WHERE DID YOU
PLAY AND WITH WHO DID YOU PLAY
WITH?
That's correct.  I played my last US show here in
Raleigh, NC along with
GROOMS OF THE
STOOL
and MOROSE VITALITY.  They will
both be joining me on my upcoming 10 day
Europe tour as well.  The show was a total
success and a great way to end my USA gigs.

YOU HAVE A 10 DAY EUROPEAN TOUR
COMING UP AS WELL. WHERE ARE YOU
HEADED AND WHO WILL YOU BE
PLAYING WITH?
Yes. I have 10 shows in 10 days hitting Germany, Poland, Netherlands and Czech Republic.  This will be my 4th
Europe tour in the past 4 years and they get better each time. The tour will consist of
BLOODSOAKED,
PSYCHIATRIC REGURGITATION, SOUL REMNANTS, GROOMS OF THE STOOL
and MOROSE
VITALITY
.

WILL THIS BE THE LAST OF YOUR LIVE SHOWS AND THE END OF THE BAND AS WELL? WHY IS
THE BAND COMING TO AN END?
Yes.  These are my last 10 shows before I hang up my guitar and the band. I've been feeling as I wanted to put
BLOODSOAKED to rest for a while now.  While I love Death Metal and I'll listen to it till I'm 100 years old my
passion for playing and writing has faded.  I've done so much more than I ever thought I would do and I have zero
regrets about my decision.  I feel I've made a huge impact as far as one-man bands is concerned and even in Death
Metal for that matter. With a bit of hard work and dedication people can take their bands to the next level.  I did it
all on my own so I know it can be done.

ARE THERE ANY GOOD OR INTERESTING ROAD / LIVE / BAND STORIES YOU COULD SHARE
WITH US?
I'm unusually the old guy that doesn't drink and maybe a bit boring on tour.  I do more sightseeing than anything.
There are some good stories of other band members running trains of some chick on her period and the stealing
her pants.  Some good hooker stories from USA tours as well as Amsterdam but most of the details will have to be
held inside to protect the innocent... hahaha

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE BLOODSOAKED CUSTOM ARACHNID GUITAR CAB?
ARACHNID CABS is a cool custom cab company run by Robert Calhoun.  He approached me about endorsing
BLOODSOAKED with a Customer BLOODSOAKED ARACHNID CAB and I agreed.  The cab is SICK and it's
on the same lines as the old
VADER CABS that most people in the underground know.  It's built like a beast and
sounds amazing.  I'm not just saying this either, it's SICK.  I would recommend anyone looking for a cab to
contact them.
WHO ARE SOME OF THE BETTER
BANDS AND LABELS FROM YOUR
HOME STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA?
Well first off there is COMATOSE MUSIC
from Kings Mountain, NC.  There are a few
other labels like
TRIBUNAL, HEAVEN AND
HELL
.  Bands are BLOODSOAKED,
ATROCIOUS ABNORMALITY, LUST OF
DECAY, MOROSE VITALITY, GROOMS
OF THE STOOL, PRIAPUS,
MALEBOLGIA, FAITH IN ASHES
and
FLESHTORN.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU THINK
PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO
FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?
How much Black/Ebony porn I watch...hahaha
WHAT WAS THE FIRST ALBUM YOU REMEMBER BUYING?
It was KISS "DOUBLE PLATINUM".

WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU EVER WENT TO?
It was MOTLEY CRUE and Y&T back in 1984-85 I think.

ARE YOU INTO ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC BESIDES WHAT YOU PLAY? WHO ARE SOME OF
THE BANDS YOU HAVE CURRENTLY BEEN LISTENING TO?
Love Glam Metal and Death Metal, some Black Metal, Power Metal and I listen to a lot of Top 40 music while
driving around in my car.  Good time fun music. I've been jamming the latest
HATE album and can't get enough
PATHOLOGY.  I listen to MEGADETH "PEACE SELLS..." a lot too.

THIS IS ALSO A HORROR WEBZINE SO I ALWAYS ASK, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE
HORROR MOVIES AND WHY?
I'm not a huge Horror movie fan but I've always loved the classics like FRIDAY THE 13TH, HALLOWEEN,
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
. Always watched Creature Double Feature as a kid. One movie I like a lot is
THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, great movie.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE BAND GWAR (MY FAVORITE BAND) AND THE PASSING OF THEIR
GREAT LEADER ODEROUS URUNGUS PASSING AWAY LAST YEAR?
Never been a big GWAR fan either, I played a show with them way back in 1988-89 in Boston but never really got
into them.  Never want to see anyone in the scene go away.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM YOU NEXT AND WILL THIS BE THE LAST OF
BLOODSOAKED?
After the 10 Day Europe tour there will be nothing coming from BLOODSOAKED.  Maybe I’ll form a new Glam
Death band!!!

PETER, THANX A LOT FOR ANSWERING THIS INTERVIEW AND FOR ALL THE KILLER MUSIC
OVER THE YEARS. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD ANYTHING ELSE TO CLOSE OUT!
Thank you so much for taking an interest in me and BLOODSOAKED and my music. I appreciate it very much
and long live Death Metal.
