CENOTAPH
"RIDING OUR BLACK OCEAN"
CHAOS RECORDS

There's more then a dozen bands by this name and I am familiar with three of them. This
five piece band from Mexico started out under the name
DAMNED CROSS in 1988 but
a year later they decided to change it
CENOTAPH. A cenotaph is a tomb or monument
that has the name or names of the deceased but the remains are somewhere else. The
lyrical themes are darkness, hate and death. Releasing "TENEBROUS APPARITIONS"
in 1990 the band's debut EP and a demo was dropped later that year, and a second demo
was put out in 1991. In 1992 the band released their first full length album "THE
GLOOMY REFLECTION OF OUR HIDDEN SORROWS". Two years later "RIDING
OUR BLACK OCEAN" was released in July of 1994 under
CYBER MUSIC which is a
Death Metal and Black Metal label from the Netherlands. Listening to this album hearing
some old school Death Metal in the music with the double bass and beats too fast to
count. The harsh head splitting vocals and heavy as hell riffs make me think back when
Death Metal was on the rise. What's great about this album is the fact that they don't
loss that old style Death Metal sound anywhere through out the nine track album. There
is one track that's an instrumental called " The Silence Of Our Black Oceans" that starts
out peaceful and mesmerizing and gets you half way through the track with the brutality
and carnage that awaits you. Sadly after releasing two more full length albums and a live
album, they called it quits in 2002. In the veins of
POSSESSED, AUTOPSY and
EMPEROR
.
