|Interview by Burt Wolf with Glenn, guitarist & singer of DESTRUKTOR.
Interview done June 16th, 2006.
DESTRUKTOR HAS BEEN CRUSHING THE UNDERGROUND FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS NOW.
CAN PREVIOUS BANDS MEMBERS WERE IN?
Well, it would be 9 years if you don't count APHASIA, otherwise it has been 11 years! The band has faced
many hurdles. Jarro (ex DESTROYER 666), played drums at various times & also Volcano played drums on our
7" & for one gig, now finally we have an awesome drummer who is dedicated to the stool & lives close by. We
have done a demo & 7", also a split live 7" with NUNSLAUGHTER & our "NUCLEAR STORM" MCD/MLP.
Regan joined on bass years ago, basically by me going up to him & hassling him out because he had a Metal shirt
on. Jared (drums), I found at a pub jamming with a guitarist at the end of a local gig. We play violent
war/Death/Thrash/Black Metal, what ever you want to call it. Intense, energetic & totally Metal.
WHY WAS THE NAME DESTRUKTOR THE CHOSEN NAME FOR THE BAND?
Because when Jarro & myself kick started things, we discussed the band name. We had the name
DESTRUKTOR ANTICHRIST, that was crap, but shortened it to DESTRUKTOR & you have a name totally
suited for us!
HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE STYLE & SOUND OF DESTRUKTOR?
Energetic, fast, heavy, brutal, catchy extreme Metal. Best ask other people that one. We have our own style, but
things do change a bit over time. But we will always be those stated words.
WHO OR WHAT HAS HAD SOME IMPACT OR INFLUENCE ON YOU CREATING YOUR STYLE &
Many things over the years. I have been a fan of Rock music since I was 4, shit like AC/DC, most importantly,
KISS. My mum & dad have always been musical & I grew up around guitar, & listening to stuff like JETHRO
TULL, QUEEN, PINK FLOYD among others. By the age of ten I knew that Heavy Metal was the way to go. At
that time, I was into SKID ROW, GUNS N ROSES & before long, evolved to METALLICA "MASTER OF
PUPPETS". From there, my thirst for extreme grew. APHASIA was born when I was 17 & the strongest
impact for me was Black/Death Metal. This I have stuck with, as nothing since has had that sound, feel &
extremity. This in relation to image, music & message. This is the chosen path & forever for DESTRUKTOR,
YOU PLAY GUITAR, BASS & DO VOCALS. HAVE
YOU HAD ANY LESSONS OR ARE YOU SELF
TAUGHT? DO YOU PLAY ANY OTHER
INSTRUMENTS AS WELL?
Well as stated, I grew up with music & my dad plays
guitar. When I was young I learnt for awhile. Just at
school, when I was 10, learning basic chords & when I
was 14/15 in high school, learning more modern stuff &
basic lead scales & patterns. I guess I am mostly self
taught considering I have had maybe 50 lessons & have
played for nearly 20 years. I only played bass on demos,
Regan plays bass. I had no lessons on bass, I just
applied my guitar knowledge & added a couple of things
more akin to a bass. I have had no vocal lessons, but i
have always been a bit of a singer & always end up
singing in bands, even if I enjoy guitar more. I can play
drums to a certain extent. I am not so good, but am
playing drums in a band with my friend, sort of straight
forward Black Metal, but slower/droney stuff. Maybe
we will do a demo next year.
THE NEWEST RELEASE I HAVE OF YOURS IS THE "NUCLEAR STORM" CD, WHICH HAS BEEN
OUT FOR OVER A YEAR NOW. HOW WELL DID THIS CD DO FOR YOU GUYS? WHAT WAS THE
RESPONSE LIKE TO IT?
This is our latest release. HELLS HEADBANGERS have done a great job for us. The MCD has done very well
for us. We have had many positive reviews, & practically no negative feedback. HELLS HEADBANGERS have
managed to get rid of nearly 2000 copies & they will be doing a 1000 vinyls, so I guess for this release I am very
IT TOOK A WHILE TO GET THIS RELEASE OUT BECAUSE OF UNNECESSARY PROBLEMS &
DELAYS. WHAT WERE THESE PROBLEMS?
Yes, no doubt I faced some hassles to get finished & released. After our first recording session, which went
well, I took the release home & obviously thought about what I wanted to get rid of, change, etc. It took way
too long for the engineer to respond to my requests to get it finished. Finally it was arranged & we got to
Melbourne to finish it, but when I took it home I noticed a really bad buzz behind the guitar track at times. Then
the engineer didn't even respond to my requests & eventually I finished it with another engineer, a girl, who was
not even into Metal. It was not perfect, but after all the fucking around I decided to settle on this mix. The next
delay was SOULSELLER having the vinyl music/layout. They took a long time to do anything, so I thought I
would get HELLS HEADBANGERS to release the MCD, which eventuated not long after. Now HELLS
HEADBANGERS are doing the vinyls also. It would've saved some hassles if we just would have went through
them in the first place.
AS YOU SAID, THIS ALBUM WAS PUT OUT BY HELLS HEADBANGERS. HOW DID YOU GET
HOOKED UP WITH THEM? HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH THEM?
I mainly new them through their work with NUNSLAGHTER. Once I started looking for a label, HELLS
HEADBANGERS was the only one I approached. They pretty much immediately said that they would do
"NUCLEAR STORM" MCD. They have been very good to DESTRUKTOR. They have done patches,
"NUCLEAR STORM" shirts, MCD & soon vinyls. They will also be releasing the split 7" with Swedish maniacs
BESTIAL MOCKERY. They are dedicated to the underground & do a good job of getting shit to those that
matter, the real Metal maniacs!!!
WHAT IS THE SUBJECT MATTER WRITTEN IN YOUR SONG LYRICS? WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE
DESTRUCTOR SONG & WHY?
From day one, lyrics have covered topics like War, Famine, Disease, Death, Blood, Satan, Crushing Religion,
Violence, Suicide, Demons, Strength, Power of the WWIII, After death Experiences, Crushing the Weak,
amongst other things. A favorite song, I'm not sure. From the 7", I would say "Brutal Desecration", on the MCD
"Nuclear Storm" & from the newer shit, I don't know, but they are all killer songs.
CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE COVER ARTWORK A LITTLE BIT & WHO DID IT?
Jarros brother Jai done the artwork. I think it is pretty self explanatory, it is I guess a brutal "coat of arms" I
don't think there is too much to read into it. Jai is a tattooist, who also done the art for our side of the split 7"
with NUNSLAUGHTER. He is very talented with pen/paint/pencil. Maybe his art may pop up on a future
DESTRUKTOR release as we are all still friends.
IS THERE ANY NEWER MATERIAL
AVAILABLE NOW OR IN THE
WORKS? WILL THIS BE RELEASED
BY HELLS HEADBANGERS AS WELL?
There is some stuff ready to record & in
the works. Our split 7" with BESTIAL
MOCKERY will be out mid 2006. And as
stated, will be through HELLS
HEADBANGERS once again. This contains
the cult track "Hail The Black Goat", which
we have played live numerous times. The
other track is a newer one "Meccademon".
It was the second song we completed with
the new drummer. I guess the other stuff
we have, will go towards our first full
DOES DESTRUKTOR PLAY OUT A LOT? WHERE ARE SOME OF THE PLACES YOU'VE PLAYED
& WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU'VE SHARED THE STAGE WITH?
Due to the hassles we have had, we have not played live a heap of times. I think in our first 8 years, we played 4
gigs. But in the last 15 months, we have played 8 gigs. With a stable, dedicated line up, it has allowed to get a lot
busier than in the past. It is a great situation to finally be in, after all the crap we have been through. Our gigs
have been mostly in Melbourne & our hometown, Bendigo. We have played in Adelaide a couple of times & once
in Sydney. I guess the best known band we have played with is DISMEMBER, last year. Other bands we have
graced the stage with include GOSPEL OF THE HORNS, NOCTURNAL GRAVES, DENOUNCEMENT
PYRE, DAWN OF AZAZEL, ABOMINATOR, STAR GAZER, CAULDRON BLACK RAM, CARBON,
MISERY & plenty others.
HOW DO YOU FEEL DESTRUKTOR HAS CHANGED OR PROGRESSED OVER THE YEARS? HOW
DO YOU FEEL THE UNDERGROUND SCENE HAS CHANGED?
DESTRUKTOR has changed, basically with improvement at our instruments & more time playing together.
Earlier on, the stuff was similar to each other song wise in regard to vocals, flow of the songs & feel. Now we
have a bit more variety, or shall we say, dynamics. The newest stuff is faster & tighter & at times heavier & at
times a bit slower. I think some of the riffing is similar to early stuff, but played better & more interesting. The
underground scene has changed vastly from our early days, as you would know, because I have been in contact
with you since about 1996. I think the biggest changes have been obviously the use of the internet. Many people
are in contact with many more people due to the lower cost of communicating. I think due to the convince
though, that more fuckheads are some how involved in the scene because they have drum program & can sit on
their lazy arses & do a "demo" on their computer & get it heard. I am most definitely not for this aspect at all!
The other change would be all the cross breed extreme Metal. Fucking circus keyboards, female vocals,
Industrial sounding shit, overly digitised crap, crazy hair do's, jumping pogo stick slam dancing fools, man, the
list goes on. It was much more real & heavy in the 80's, earlier 90's. We try to hold on to those days as best we
ARE THERE ANY FUNNY, INTERESTING OR GOOD BAND STORIES YOU COULD SHARE WITH
Live I have been known to have problems with my mic stand dropping. One time, It was caught on video, i was
thrashing hard & throwing kicks at the mic to lift it at a level that i could sing from, that looked pretty funny.
Another time live, we were going at it when Wes, a bit of a maniac, got up on stage & started doing push ups
front of stage with his pants & jocks down at his ankles. There are so many funny stories with Jarro & Jamie
(great mate of mine). Too many too mention. All the usual shit, people getting desecrated, pissing on cars,
hilarious prank calls, people eating cat food, people drinking urine, lots of hilarious moments, some not quite so
hilarious, but still classssiiiccc!!!
WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS THE BEST & WORST PART ABOUT BEING IN A BAND?
The best bits are the friends you meet along the way, the release of aggression & developing songs, from the
initial riff, to the release. The worse things are when you have problems with the line up, when you play a shit
gig & losing money, but really, there are very few bad things about being in DESTRUKTOR. It is a lot easier I
imagine being a three piece.
WHO DO YOU FEEL ARE SOME OF THE BETTER BANDS, LABELS & ZINES IN AUSTRALIA?
Of the bands that are active, the better bands, in my opinion are DENOUNCEMENT PYRE, NOCTURNAL
GRAVES, GOSPEL OF THE HORNS, FUNERARY PIT, GRENADE, SHACKLES, STAR GAZER,
PORTAL CAULDRON BLACK RAM & a couple of others. From the past, I suggest SADISTIK
EXEKUTION, BESTIAL WARLUST (who are working on "SATAN'S FIST" full length), ENTASIS,
CRUCIFORM, HECATOMB, NECROTOMY, MORTAL SIN & HOBBS ANGEL OF DEATH. Zine wise,
we have very little to offer, DEPTH CHARGE is easily the best of them, the way it should be, with decent
bands. I guess NORTHERN SHADOWS is the other one of note, that I only recently found out about. It is the
same with labels. There are a couple more associated Grind, but on the Black/Thrash/Death, APOCALYPTOR,
ran by Jarro, is clearly the best one in Australia. Has been for the last 4 or 5 years really.
WHAT DO THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND DO WHEN NOT DOING ANY WORK FOR THE BAND?
JOBS, HOBBIES, ETC?
Well, both me & Regan work regular jobs, I work in a furniture store & Regan is a builder. Jahred does not
work. Apart from our music, I get into football (Aussie footy) & Cricket. And play a bit of sport. I live in a
house with my girlfriend & a cat & dog. I love to drink & fire up with a few mates from time to time. Regan, in
his spare time socialises in pubs with his never ending list of friends, lifts some weights, watches a few movies
& fuck knows what else. Jahred has more spare time & cruises around, just doing his thing really. He loves to
have a few drinks & likes movies & some comedy shit.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST ALBUM YOU REMEMBER BUYING? WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT
YOU EVER ATTENDED?
The first album I remember buying was KISS "ALIVE 2" double LP for 50 cents at a market joint when I was
probably 7. From my own hard earned money, the KISS "DOUBLE PLATINUM" CD was my first purchase. I
think the first two things I ever owned was KERMIT THE FROG - "THE RAINBOW CONNECTION" vinyl &
KISS - "KILLERS" cassette. The first concert I attended was QUEEN back in 1985, when I was a young fella.
The first Death Metal gig I went to was when BOLT THROWER toured Australia in 1993.
ARE YOU INTO ANY OTHER STYLES OF
MUSIC BESIDES WHAT YOU PLAY? WHO
ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU HAVE
RECENTLY BEEN LISTENING TO?
Well, I like lots of other Metal that is not brutal
& flat out, that's just what i prefer to play. Of
course you would gather I am into KISS. I like
lots of stuff, it's just I choose not to listen to it.
99% of the time that i play music, it is
Metal/Heavy Rock, weather that be KISS,
METALLICA, MOTLEY CRUE, CORONER,
KRISIUN, BEHERIT or MY DYING BRIDE. I
need to hear those distorted guitars & solid beats.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU FEEL PEOPLE
WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW
I am a paid member of the Hawthron Football
club, I play indoor soccer, cricket & did
freestyle fighting for 3 years. I love the UFC &
PRIDE, Vale Tudo, etc.
WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT FROM DESTRUKTOR?
As stated earlier, we will have a split 7" with BESTIAL MOCKERY out soon, & also, finally, the "NUCLEAR
STORM" vinyls will be out after many delays. After this, we will play a couple of gigs, & work on a few more
songs in preparation for our debut full length, which I would estimate to be one year away. We already have a
few killer songs ready to go & I think we should have another 5 ready by the end of 2006. Hopefully we can
look to tour beyond our shores once the full length is out.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE ANSWERING THIS INTERVIEW? WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW
THAT IT'S DONE?
I have been enjoying a relaxing weekend. Today I am just having a couple of cans & have been dubbing a tape
for a trade I owe from some time ago. Nothing really exciting.
GLENN, THANX AS ALWAYS FOR STAYING IN TOUCH & FOR ANSWERING THIS INTERVIEW. IF
YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO ADD GO AHEAD & DO SO!!!
