|Interview done by Burt Wolf with Andre, guitarist for EMBEDDED.
Interview done July 1st, 2004.
I KNOW EMBEDDED HAS BEEN AROUND FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS, BUT COULD YOU GIVE A
CONDENSED VERSION OF THE BANDS HISTORY?
I started EMBEDDED back in 1994 as a three piece. After a self titled demo release in 1996 & a couple of shows
all across Germany the band unfortunately split up in 1998 because of musical differences. But already one year
later I decided to give the whole project another go, with three new recruited members. With this line up we
recorded the MCD "FRAGMENT OF HORROR", which was released in 2000 & gained us quite a lot of
enthusiastic attention with in the Death Metal underground pretty quickly. Two of the songs also appeared on a
split 7" with DISASTROUS MURMUR, released by PERVERTED TASTE RECORDS shortly after. With a
slightly changed line up (a new vocalist & second guitar player joined EMBEDDED), we finally entered the
studio to record our debut full length "BANISHED FROM THE LIGHT". It was released in 2001 by REVENGE
PRODUCTIONS. Again the reactions were very enthusiastic. But a few successful months later, very heavy
personal differences in the band caused another line up change. To prevent the final split of EMBEDDED, the
second guitar player & the bass player had to leave the band. They were replaced shortly after by two friends of
mine-which were involved in their own band at the time, too-just play some gigs. That worked out very well &
after their band finally split up they joined EMBEDDED. So currently we are working hard on a new CD.
WHY WAS THE NAME EMBEDDED
CHOSEN FOR THE BAND NAME?
It is simply taken from the words
"...embryonic death, embedded in your
brain, suffocation, strangulation, death is
fucking you insane..." ("Silent loud even
if you are totally drunk, ha, ha, ha... But
in this particular case the context in
which it is used was the main reason to
choose the name for the band: to be in
someone's brain, doing something ugly &
disturbing there with your music,
currupting the senses & manipulating the
will, the soul. Something like this, you
know. We are the tiny little voice in your
head, forcing you to do things you
normally refuse to do...
WHO OR WHAT HAS HELPED
INFLUENCE YOU IN CREATING
In the early days of EMBEDDED I was heavily inspired by bands like (old) DEATH, UNLEASHED,
MORGOTH, VADER & ASPHYX & just wanted to play music quite similar to theirs: simple &
brutal-straight-in-your-face-old-school Death Metal! Now we are often compared with MALEVOLENT
CREATION, DEICIDE, SUFFOCATION & MONSTROSITY & i think that fits quite good. I adore these
bands & I can't & won't deny their influence on my style & sound. But the main influence on my music is the
need to over come with all the band & negative things in my life. I force this into my music & that is like therapy
for me. It's hard to describe. Other people beat the shit out of each other-I play Death Metal, to put it this way,
HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE STYLE & SOUND OF EMBEDDED?
Fast & brutal, yet catchy Death Metal that will break your neck. Just get in the pit & let the mayhem begin...
WERE ANY OF THE MEMBERS OF EMBEDDED IN OTHER BANDS BEFORE? WHICH ONES?
Some of us were in a local band called BOUND FOR TOMB
before. They played a mixture between melodic Death & Black
Metal & the band called MORBUS. They sounded like
GOREFEST & released two CD's before they split up in 2000. I
think. He is still the drummer of SECRETS OF THE MOON, a
local but quite popular Black Metal band, too. Rainer does his
screams & grunts in a local Death-Grind band called THE VAST,
too. Besides Christian plays there. I just put my whole energy into
EMBEDDED. No side projects or something.
I ONLY HAVE YOUR "BANISHED FROM THE LIGHT" CD
WHICH CAME OUT IN 2001 ON REVENGE
PRODUCTIONS. HOW WELL DID THAT CD DO FOR YOU
It gained us a lot of enthusiastic reactions, which really over
whelmed us, & more possibilities to play live especially outside of
Germany. It helped us out very much in spreading our name in the
scene. It simply pushed us to a higher level.
HOW DID YOU GET HOOKED UP WITH REVENGE PRODUCTIONS?
We played the "FUCK THE COMMERCE"-Open Air about three years ago as the opening act & Daniel was very
MCD, listened to it & offered us a deal.
DESCRIBE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CD COVER ART & WHO DID THE ARTWORK?
At first we didn't have any idea of what the CD should "look" like, there was only the title "BANISHED FROM
THE LIGHT". We just knew we didn't want to have any typical blood & gore stuff as cover art, we wanted
something unusual, something different. Then we found this picture of Jesus & there was this little twisted idea:
You believe in God? You believe in Jesus? He is your savior? He is your sense of living? But what if your savior
isn't the one you thought he is? What if your saviour is a two faced betrayer with a demonic side hidden in the
darkness? A seducer, banished from the light? The serpent-& not the son of God? So we made a painting look a
like out of this picture, something like a modern icon. You can see the tormented upper part of his body very
clearly, like a obvious symbol for all the pain & suffering he endured for us(well, the bible says so), but the face,
start questioning yourself, you start to doubt: Who really is he? I know this seems to be a quite religious
message, but we are not a religious band. We just used Jesus as a universal symbol to ask everybody the simple
question: What if everything you believed in & lived for so far is nothing more than a fake, a lie, a dream that will
never come to reality? The cover art was done by a friend of our vocalist. She is very experienced in working
with Adobe Photoshop & did it for free. I think she did an excellent job because it was very difficult to change
the original picture of Jesus into that drawing you can see on the cover of our CD.
WHAT IS SOME OF THE LYRICAL
CONTENT OF YOUR SONGS?
Mainly it's about someone who is losing his mind
head, trapped in a mental maze, confused &
unable to find a way out of this situation, reacting
ending up in an unbearable state of self loathing
You bet, it is... We decided to print excerpts from
the lyrics in the CD booklet to give the listeners
only a hint of what's really going on in the song -
they have to listen closely to capture the real
atmosphere of every song on the album. It's like a
script for the musical experience, if you know
what I mean.
DO YOU HAVE ANY NEWER RELEASES AVAILABLE AFTER THIS CD & ARE YOU GUYS STILL
WITH REVENGE PRODUCTIONS?
frequent line up changes in the past didn't make it easier. Well, you can't enforce creativity. Sometimes we don't
No, just the demo, the MCD (both sold out) & the split 7". We are very slow in writing new songs & the quite
get a single riff within two months & sometimes we write two new songs during one rehearsal. Besides this we
are very fastidious when it comes to new songs. When everybody in the band is really satisfied with the song it's
done, if not, okay, some more work to do. It's kinda weird but that's how it goes. Our next CD will definitely be
released by REVENGE PRODUCTIONS. We are very satisfied with the work Daniel does! No restrictions in
any way, fair conditions, great support - nothing more to say. More than we've ever expected.
YOU DO THE VOCAL WORK IN THE BAND, HOW DO YOU CHANGE BACK & FORTH BETWEEN
THE DIFFERENT VOCAL STYLES? (Rainer the vocalist was originally going to do the interview, but
passed it on to Andre, since he is the only original member left in the band.)
As far as I can answer this, I think it's a kind of breathing technique or something. No effects, now low pitched
shit, no harmonizer or something. He never had any problems with his throat! Rainer's voice is simply incredible
& in my opinion definitely of international class.
TECHNICAL & MATURE EXPERIENCED
SOUND. ARE ANY OF YOU
PROFESSION-ALLY TRAINED MUSICIANS
OR SELF TAUGHT? DO ANY OF YOU
PLAY OTHER INSTRUMENTS BESIDES
WHAT YOU PLAY IN THE BAND?
Oh thanks! Well, everybody in the band is just a
self taught musician, no professional training or
something. I can't even read notes or play any
scales by heart, no joke. Since I started playing
guitar I just wanted to play songs & fucking rock
in a band, you know. That hasn't changed over
the years. Everybody who is involved in
EMBEDDED started very early playing in a band
& I think this might be the main reason for our
sound as you described it. Christian plays
bass-guitar, too as I mentioned before & Rainer
plays drums, but not in a band. He just practices
HAS EMBEDDED PLAYED OUT A LOT? WHERE ARE SOME OF THE PLACES YOU'VE PLAYED &
WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU DID SHOWS WITH?
Unfortunately we don't play live as much as we really want to because of our jobs & studies. So we often try to
get gigs with well known bands or at festivals to reach a greater audience if possible. Up to now we played
several gigs all across Germany, did a small tour in Finland, played in Sweden & in the Czech republic. Some of
the cool bands we shared the stage with are: DISAVOWED, GOREROTTED, PUNGENT STENCH,
SINISTER, ROTTEN SOUND, KRISUN, CRYPTOPSY, KRABATHOR, PYAEMIA, SEVERE TORTURE.
DO ANY OF YOUR SHOWS STAND OUT FOR ANY REASONS? ANY INTERESTING ROAD
The German "FUCK THE COMMERCE" Festival was really outstanding. We played there three years ago as the
opening act & it was quite amazing to play in front of hundreds of people for the first time & having the
possibility to share the stage with bands like KRISUN & CRYPTOPSY. In 2002 we played the "OBSCENE
EXTREME" Festival in the Czech republic in front of about 1500 people. That was a killer! And our Mini-tour
together with DEEPRED (Fin) & IMMERSED IN BLOOD (Swe) in Finland two years ago was an amazing
experience. It happened everything you expect of a real Death Metal tour: chaos, gallons of alcohol, crazy
people, hot girls & finally a lot of new friends.
WHAT'S THE BEST & WORST THING ABOUT BEING IN A BAND?
Best thing: when people say our music has a special meaning to them.
Worst thing: the countless hours of waiting until you can get on stage.
bands there, sounding & acting very professional & high skilled, but in a way quite comparable to each other
(especially all the "grunt n grooves" outfits you have over there). In my opinion German bands are trying to put a
unique twist in their music - like the ones I mentioned before. They don't want to imitate, but to express
something special within their musical possibilities.
WHAT DO THE MEMBERS OF EMBEDDED DO WHEN NOT DOING ANY WORK FOR THE BAND?
Rainer (v) is a student of psychology; myself a student of German language & literature, media science & history
& as a side line I have worked about six years for a local weekly newspaper as an editor; Matthias (b) is a
bachelor of Health & has something to do with massage & physical rehab; Christian (g) works as an industry
mechanic in a factory & Jorg (d) is a male nurse & takes care of psychopathic drug addicts in a hospital (no
ARE YOU INTO ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC BESIDES WHAT YOU PLAY? WHO ARE SOME
OF THE BANDS YOU'VE CURRENTLY BEEN LISTENING TO?
I'm only into Metal music & I listen to bands like (old) SCORPIONS, IRON MAIDEN & BLACK SABBATH
as well as to NAPALM DEATH, NASUM & DEVOURMENT - it depends on my mood, you know. But I really
can't stand this so called Gothic Metal Shit with female vocals & these tons of fantasy-happy-true-sword &
sorcery Metal crap! ISOUNDTRACKat sucks. My current favorites: SUFFOCATION-"SOULS TO DENY",
DISAVOWED-"PERCEPTIVE DECEPTION", MY DYING BRIDE-"SONGS OF DARKNESS", IN
FLAMES-"SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR ESCAPE", GORGASM-"MASTICATE TO DOMINATE",
MONSTROSITY-"RISE TO POWER", DISMEMBER-"WHERE IRONCROSSES GROW", DARK
FUNERAL-"DE PROFUNDIS...LIVE", DISGORGE-"CONSUME THE FORSAKEN", MACHINE
HEAD-"THROUGH THE ASHES OF EMPIRES".
IN YOUR OPINION, WHO ARE SOME OF
THE BETTER BANDS, LABELS & ZINES IN
Bands: DEW SCENTED, FLESHCRAWL,
BURDEN OF GRIEF, VENERAL DISEASE,
NECROPHAGIST, PROFANITY, HARMONY
DIES, DESPONDANCY, ANASARCA,
FRAGMENTS OF UNBECOMING, TEARS
OF DECAY, SECRETS OF THE MOON, THE
VAST. Labels: mhm, no idea... Zines: UNHOLY
TERROR, NECROMANIAC, CARNAGE.
HOW WOULD COMPARE THE U.S. MUSIC
SCENE TO THE SCENE THERE IN
You seem to have a lot of high quality Death Metal
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE
MOVIES & TV SHOWS?
I really love the work of David Lynch,
especially LOST HIGHWAY &
MULLHOLLAND DRIVE. What else?
DARK CITY, THE OTHERS, THE SIXTH
SENSE, most of Kubrick's movies, DONNIE
DARKO, you know, mainly very dark,
obscure & disturbing stuff with a difference.
TV shows? SOUTH PARK & SIX FEET
IF EMBEDDED WERE A MOVIE WHAT
WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
Oh, that's easy, just see question about our
lyrics. And we did the score for it...
WHAT'S ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Maybe that I am 29 years old & still a Playstation 2 addict...
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM EMBEDDED IN THE NEAR FUTURE?
Well, hopefully a new CD, but there's still a lot of work to do to get it finished. But we will make a video for
"Stench Of Burning Flesh" from our "BANISHED..." album that maybe will appear on the next record, we'll see.
The best thing is that we don't have to pay for it. A friend of us who is into movie making does it for free.
I'M OUT OF QUESTIONS, SO FEEL FREE TO PLUG ANYTHING YOU'D LIKE OR JUST SPEW
SOMETHING OUT. THANX A LOT FOR DOING THE INTERVIEW!!!
Wow, this was hard work, man...ha,ha,ha. I think, my English really sucks...Never the less, thanks for your
interest in EMBEDDED & the very enjoyable interview. To everybody out there: check us out on the web (with
lots of information, photos, news & downloads & feel free to sign our guestbook).
