ENDING QUEST
“THE SUMMONING"
F.D.A. REKOTZ

“THE SUMMONING” is the first full length release from this Swedish Death Metal
band. Formed in 2009,
ENDING QUEST have previously released two demos, “LED
TO THE SLAUGHTER” in 2010 and “VLAD TEPES” in 2011. As so many bands,
especially in Sweden, these guys provide a lot of other studio material aside from the
aforesaid demos and this full length. Members having also logged in time with
DESOLATOR, SOLILOQUIN and WOLFCROSS. ENDING QUEST started as a
purely cover band, but evolved into the powerful Death Metal force we have before us
today, performing their own material. I must comment, I’m glad they did.
ENDING
QUEST
play a potent and well constructed variation on the classic Swedish Death Metal
sound.  While not completely reprinting the often traveled Sunlight Studio-style
production, that vast and heavy guitar sound is present here.
ENDING QUEST add onto
that specific sound with music slightly out of the usual “
ENTOMBED circa 1990s
sound” with elements of more classic Heavy Metal (especially in the guitar department,
see “Voices“) and mixing them into the Death Metal milieu with seeming ease. Even over
and above the exceptionally well written songs, the aspect of “THE SUMMONING”
that is paramount, easily, is the heaviness. So much Death Metal is machine-polished and
shined to within an inch of it's life. NONE of that here. You can almost feel the cemetery
soil and smell the decay. A cryptic element is all over this. Being only a writer and having
neither musical talent nor any studio knowledge or experience, I don’t know how they do
that voodoo that they do, but they do it SO well. Just the feeling this evokes. This is
Death Metal. As a long time fan of Death Metal, I have felt this before, and in such
hallowed places as “LEFT HAND PATH” and “LOST PARADISE”, for a young band
on their debut to come out with eleven songs, wreaking of such a powerful feeling of
morbidity is quite rare. From what I can figure it's of no single trick either. These guys
have put together a classic Death Metal release, that in years to come, should be hailed up
high with even the best of the old guard. Memorable, heavy and with songs that enthrall
the listener throughout, pretty fucking good for a debut full length eh? With the
atmosphere of the
TEMPLAR’s graveyard in “TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD”, along
with a great heavy, chugging rhythm,
UNLEASHED‘s “THE UTTER DARK” demo is
instantly the closest comparison I could make to this (“Grotesque Abolishment“, a case
in point), but additional to that basic framework and similar vocal style, a band who
knows how to write immensely interesting songs with guitar leads worthy of much more
experienced acts. As a Death Metal fan, I have “summoned” this one often and as a
collector, I’d kill to get the demos.
