MOVIE & VIDEO REVIEWS
(JULY 2006)
BARBARELLA (PG) PARAMOUNT PICTURES (DVD) 1968
Starring: Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O'Shea, Marcel Marceau & more.
This is one of those cult movies I have heard so much about for many years, but just now have gotten to see it. The movie follows Jane Fonda who is a warrior & queen of the galaxy. She is sent to find a lost colleuge named Durand Durand. She lands in these many different worlds & runs into many bizarre people. She gets help from some of these people & she repays them by having sex with them. She then lands on a planet that the queen wants to rule the universe at any means. The story was a little slow & cheesy, but the movie was a bit ahead of it's time for 1968. The funny thing is the movie is PG, but there is nudity (Jane Fonda & others) & the theme revolves around sex a lot. Worth one viewing at least for the cult status of the film!!!
CUBE (R) TRIMARK PICTURES (DVD) 1997
Starring: Nicole De Boer, Nicky Guardagni, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller, Maurice Dean Wint & more.
A group of people wake up & find themselves all trapped inside a cube room. The room is some sort of experiment for someone or something. Each of the people hav different personalities & traits that will help them escape, They try to figure out the pattern to the cube & how to escape by the different numbers & symbols on the walls. If they make wrong moves & enter the wrong room they some how die, because each  incorrect room is boobytraped & each one is a different trap. There isn't much special effects, but the traps were pretty cool. You can really feel the intensity that is growing between the people the longer they are stuck inside. This was a really decent film & a cool concept for a film. Check it out!!!

DATE MOVIE (R) 20TH CENTURY FOX (DVD) 2006
Starring: Alyson Hannigan, Adam Campbell, Sophie Monk, Tony Cox, Eddie Griffin & more.
This film is a parody of a bunch of different types of date movies & girlie flicks from the past. They also parody a lot of other movies along the way. The movie follows a really fat girl who is after a really hot guy. She gets a overhaul & a remake, then goes to a date doctor to get advice on how to get this guys. They parody movies like
WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, NAPOLEAN DYNOMITE, HITCH, MEET THE FOCKERS & some others. The film wasn't even that funny. There were a few funny parts, but the rest of the jokes were either gross or stupid. This is one that looked funny, but turned out to be a real flop. Take your chances.

MATCH POINT (R) DREAM WORKS (DVD) 2005
Starring: Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Alexander Armstrong, Brian Cox, Scarlet Johansson, Penelope Wilton & more.
I wasn't sure about this film, because I don't like Woody Allen films & this was one of them. The film looked some what good though & I like Brian Cox & Scarlett Johansson a lot. The film follows an ex tennis pro who wants to live a simple life. He meets a girl & falls for her. Once he is a serious relationship, he then gets extremely obssessed with her brothers wife. They start messing around with each other secretly & things get worse from there. The film has a good twists at the end, but was extremely boring & slow up to this point. If you like Woody Allen's films then you like this, if not don't even bother.

MAY (R) LIONS GATE FILMS (DVD) 2002
Starring: Angela Bettis, Jeremy Sisto, Anna Faris, James Duval, Nicole Hiltz & more.
A young lonely girl with a lazy eye becomes very isolated to the world & very lonely as she grows up. She works in a venternarians office doing surgery & stuff. She does a lot sewing & makes her own cloths. She is a little off in the head. She becomes friends with the receptionist at the vets office. She then falls a mechanic who works in the same town. They start to date & get serious, until she becomes very weird. She has this obsession with the dead, blood & gore, but she takes her obssession a little too far. There is a strange little end as she becomes more & more deranged. This was a decent film to watch, but it's listed as a horror flick. It wasn't scary at all, but a little off & suspenseful. Give it a viewing!!!

MUST LOVE DOGS (PG-13) WARNER BROS. (DVD) 2005
Starring: Diane Lane, John Cusack, Elizabeth Perkins, Christopher Plummer, Dermont Mulroney & more.
Diane lane is a recently divorced woman, who's family feels it is time for her to get out & start dating again. They do what they can to help her get out there & start dating. She falls for the father of one of her pre-school students. She alos puts her profile on a dating website. She gets a few responses, but they are all flops, except one. This is John Cusack, who she really likes, but they have some really akward moments together. Through the movie the dates have their highs & lows, but seem to work out for the best in the end. I wasn't planning on watching this movie, but it was actually a good story, a bit funny & heart warming, plus i really like Diane Lane & John Cusack as actors. Better than ever expected!!!

His goal is to get a date in this alotted time. He goes through a ton of different people getting closer & closer to his goal. He even gets into movie premiers to get close to her as well. There are some really funny parts of him freaking out & his friends making fun of him, but it is amazing all the effort that went into this just to achieve his life long dream. I was very impressed.

NEW WORLD (PG-13) NEW LINE CINEMA (DVD) 2005
Starring: Colin Farrel, Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale, Q'orianka Kilcher, Raoul Trujillo & more.
Colin Farrell plays the exploer John Smith who comes to the new world to start a settlement for England. Once they arrive on the shores, they are met with the natives of the land. They start out as nice & helping each other harvest the land & survive, but once things turn bad, they engage in war & practically destroy each other. In the mist of all this, John Smith falls in love with Pocahontas, the daughter of the Indian chief. . This film looked good when it was in the theaters, but I'm not a fan of Colin Farrell. The film was a bit too long & had some slow parts, but was actually pretty decent & a good depiction of the story.

ONE LAST THING (R) MAGNOLIA PICTURES (DVD) 2005
Starring: Michael Angarano, Cynthia Nixon, Sunny Mabrey, Gina Gershon, Ethan Hawke & more.
A sixteen year old kid is diagnosed with terminal cancer & doesn't have much time to live. He gets one wish from the make a wish foundation. That one wish was to spend a weekend with the top model he is in love with. Everyone is shocked at his wish. Her manager finds out & takes a trip to see the kid for the publicity. He then heads to New York with his two best friends to search for her. Along the way they have a few little adventures & meets some interesting people. This was a great film. I didn't even expect to like it, but I loved it. The story was great, the acting was great & I liked the way it was done. There was a little bit of comedy, sadness, action, suspense & more all in this film. This is a great film to watch & it's nothing like the majority of the stuff I watch.

PULSE (R) MAGNOLIA PICTURES (DVD) 2001
Starring: Haruhiko Kato, Kumiko Aso, Koyuki, Kurume Arisaka, Masatoshi Matsuo & more.
A group of college students are working on a computer program, when one of them starts acting weird. He isolates himself from them & then kills himself. When they play the disc he was working on they see the image of his dead body roaming around the apartment. From there, more & more people start dying & they are getting images from their deaths through other electronic devices. Things get more & more bizarre as the movie goes on. This was a pretty cool concept, but the film tended to drag on a bit more. Let's hope the American remake doesn't follow the same path as the original Japanese version.

REAL FICTION (R) SAEROM ENTERTAINMENT (DVD) 2000
Starring: Jin-Mo Ju, Jin-Ah Kim, Min-Seok Son, Jerak Lee, Ki-Yeon Kim & more
This is an Asian film about a street artist who is being bullyed by some low level thugs. They are forcing everyone to pay them or they will beat & torture them. This street artist goes to one of his friends who wants to kill them & convinces him to help him. The film doesn't have much dialogue to it, but was an ok film. The thing that was cool about this movie is that it was all shot in one take, with no re shoots or anything. You can actually see one of the females who is filming parts of the film along with some other crew members through out the film. This was alright, but not one of the best Asian films I've seen lately.
RUNNING SCARED (R) MEDIA 8 ENTERTAINMENT (DVD) 2006
Starring: Paul Walker, Cameron Bright, Vera Farmiga, Karel Roden, Alex Neuberger & more.
Paul Walker plays a low level mob guy in the suburbs of New Jersey. He & his bodies get caught in a shoot out when a drug deal goes sour. They kill most of the guys & find out they were cops. Walker was giving the job of getting rid of the evidence & guns. His son & friend are playing in the basement & discover the hidden evidence. The friend takes the gun & shoots his father who is abusive to him & his mother & then takes off. The rest of the story is of the little boy on the run & Walker on the chase after him. This film was very intense & had a really good story going on through out it. I liked how all the different people were involved som what with the gun & how they all crossed paths a lot. There are some really surrprising twists too. This is one I would highly recommend if you like intense action films.

THE ISLE (R) MYUNG FILM COMPANY (DVD) 2000
Starring: Jung Suh, Yoosuk Kim, Sung Hee Park, Jae-Heyeon Jo, Hane Seon Jeing & more.
This was a pretty odd film. A young woman run a fishing shop on the lake, where people can rent these little huts that float on the water & go a live there for as long as they want. She provides them with food, drink & even sex. She sleeps with all of them, but really only wants the one guy. This man is a cop & keeps thinking of commiting suicide for something he did. Some of the other men get some prostitutes to come have fun with them. The female running the place doesn't like this & she kills the prostitutes & their pimp. Once the cops find out, they come searching for her, but she escapes. There are some bizarre things that happen in this film. It's kind of slow, but worth watching for the few strange parts!!!
THE RINGER (PG-13) 20TH CENTURY FOX (DVD) 2005
Starring: Johnny Knoxville, Brian Cox, Janna Ambort, Geoffry Areno, Luis Avaloe & more.
Brian Cox has a gambling problem & has found himself in big trouble. The way he will get out of it is by rigging the Special Olympics. The way he will do this is have his nephew pretend to be retarted & enter the olympics. Of course there is a lot of mishaps, but they are all at Johnny Knoxvilles expense. This movie got a bad rep, because it's dealing with the handicapped, but the movie actually has a good heartfelt story to it & doesn't really make fun of the handicapped. They actually spend most of the time making fun of Knoxville. The movie wasn't as funny as I thought it would be, but it was still very good. Fans of Knoxville will enjoy this!!!

VERSUS (R) MIRAMAX FILMS (DVD) 2000
Starring: Tak Sakaguchi, Hideo Sakaki, Chieko Misaka, Kenji Matsuda, Yuichiro Arai & more.
There are 666 portals in this world that lead to the other side. The 444th portal is in Japan & is in the Forest Of Resurrection. When an escaped prisoner winds up in these woods, he is tracked by a bunch of henchmen. What they soon find out is that anyone killed in these woods returns in a zombie like form. There are ton of zombies who return & fight these men. There was a ton of great fight scenes mixed with campy humor & great gore. I loved the blood that flowed all through out the film, especially when the zombies were shredded to pieces. Some slow spots, but plenty of action, drama & gore to keep you highly interested. i can see what this film has become a cult favorite & there will be a sequel which i am looking forward too. This is a must for any fan of Asian action, horror & gore flicks. This is a great film!!!
BE COOL (R) MGM (Showtime) 2005
Starring: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Cedric The Entertainer, Christina Milian & more.
Travolta is a movie producer who is tired of his industry & decied he is going to try his hand in the music industry. He finds a young singer in a club & steals her from her manager. He wants to make her the next big Pop star. He combines his forces with a widowed record producer to achieve his goal. What he doesn't know is she has another contract with another record company. All hell breaks loose & everyone is out to destroy everyone to get this girl on their label. This film looked like it would be pretty funny, especially with all the big names in it, but this movie was actually pretty boring & slow & there were very few funny parts through out the film. You can take your chances if you'd like, but I wouldn't even bother wasting your time!!!

CARS (PG) DISNEY / PIXAR (Theater) 2006
Starring: Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt, Larry The Cable Guy, Cheech Marin & more.
Disney & Pixar have done it again. This time the story follows Lightning McQueen, who is a rookie race car. He is on his way to his big race, when he gets lost in the middle of the desert & finds himself in a small town called Radiator Springs. Here he runs into a bunch of different & unique cars who become his friends & show him that there is more to life than winning & fame. The film was done very well & was very funny as expected from Disney & Pixar. Like always there are some things that are more for adults & then the silly goofy stuff for the kids. This is yet another great film to go down in this company history. Just as great as the rest of their films!!!
Everyone should watch this very cool flick!!!

All sorts of chaos ensues along the way, from the start of the planning to the get away escape. Some other people get envolved with the robbery & go after them & some join them. This is another movie that looked really good from the trailer, but wound up being very boring, not very funny & a little slow moving. Both of these sides are constantly battle to take control over the other. Once one does, they will rule. There are vampires & shape shifters all through out the film battling each other. They are after a small child who holds more power than both of them. The film was pretty decent for a foreign film, but was a little slow all the way through. The movie won tons of awards in Russia & I'm sure will have a cult following through out the world!!!

ULTRA VIOLET (PG-13) SCREEN GEMS (DVD) 2006
Starring: Milla Jovovich, Cameron Bright, Nick Chinlund, William Fichtner, Sebastian Andrieu & more.
This film came out the same time as
AEON FLUX & looked like a rip off of that film, but it's not. This film is actually a lot better than that one was. The film takes place in the future, where scientest are experiementing to make the perfect human. Of course things go wrong & they create a virus that gives people vampire like powers, so they called it vampirism. The government set out to kill them all, but Violet tends to fight back. Milla was the perfect person for this part & she does a great job in kicking ass & doing the action scenes. Some of the stuff is a little far fetched, but it's a sci-fi film that takes place in the future so anything is possible. This is a much better flick than it' was made out to be & well worth watching, especially to see Milla kicking ass in all those great outfits. Check this film out!!!
