|Interview by Burt Wolf with Ross G., guitarist for THE TENTH CIRCLE.
Interview done March 16th, 2006.
YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN AROUND SINCE 2001 UNDER THE NAME CIRRHOSIS. PLEASE GIVE
SOME OF THE BANDS HISTORY LEADING UP TO NOW? ANY PREVIOUS BANDS MEMBERS
The core writing group Dave, Jasin & myself have been together from the start...& that is really important to us.
Ross W. is our third & best throat man who replaced Steve "Goat" Waterman who was very good & great on
stage...he is now a pro golfer living in Florida.
WHY WAS THE NAME CIRRHOSIS CHOSEN ORIGINALLY & WHY THE NAME CHANGE TO THE
You know picking a band name is harder than it looks...back in 2001 having a "single word" band name was still
in style & during the one month process at some point Dave mentioned CIRRHOSIS & since it was the best
name (that wasn't taken) we all agreed. Then the "album title" band names became the trend & we felt that
CIRRHOSIS pigeon holed us as Death Metal & sounded some what dated to the 90's...so the process began
again & Dave again mentioned THE TENTH CIRCLE. Which really seemed to connect to the lyrical content of
WHO OR WHAT HAS HAD SOME INFLUENCE ON YOU CREATING YOUR MUSIC & IN LIFE IN
For me...SLAYER! They saved my life...I couldn't imagine a world without their music. As far as influencing
my style...I would say I'm not sure.
HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE STYLE & SOUND OF THE TENTH CIRCLE?
Modern Speed Metal which is a fusion of Thrash, Death, Tech & Black Metal.
HOW DID YOU HOOK UP WITH ROSS WHITECAVAGE OF HOW IT ENDS TO JOIN THE BAND?
Ross & I are good friends & CIRRHOSIS & HOW IT ENDS did a bunch of shows together. Ross W. always
said he loved what we were doing. So, once I heard he left HOW IT ENDS & when we parted ways with
Goat...he was my first call.
YOU ALSO GOT TIM YEUNG OF HATE ETERNAL & VITAL REMAINS PLAYING DRUMS ON THIS
RELEASE. HOW DID YOU GET HIM INVOLVED & IS HE A PERMANENT PART OF THE BAND?
We first met Tim at March Metal Meltdown VI & when we finished our demo I sent it to him. He called me the
day he received it & said he was in. I believe his work on our record is his best work to date. Tim has since
moved to Los Angeles & is in a new band with Dino C. (x-FEAR FACTORY) & has not looked back. Although
our original drummer Rob Yellets is helping us out with doing local shows, we are looking for a permanent
I GOT YOUR NEW CD AWHILE AGO IN 2005, BUT IT IS NOT BEING RELEASED UNTIL APRIL
2006. WHY DID YOU WAIT SO LONG TO UNLEASH IT TO THE PUBLIC?
Good question. We wanted to have the reviews done prior to shopping it around. Waiting for enough reviews
took 10 weeks. The promo pack took 2 weeks to make. The "shopping around" took 12 weeks. Since we didn't
receive an exceptable deal with any labels we targeted, I decided to keep it for myself & release it on my label
BLED OUT RECORDS. So, the final artwork & printing & replication is taking 4 weeks. Add it all up & you get
an April 1st release date.
HOW WELL HAS THIS CD "OF WAR AND REFLECTION" BEEN DOING IN THE PRESS SO FAR?
I couldn't be happier with the reviews. Out of like 16 (English language) reviews that it received only one was
"so-so", one was say "really good" & the other 14 were from "very good to great".
CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE CD COVER, IT'S MEANING & WHO DID IT A BIT?
It symbolizes the end of all hope...the angels are the last of gods angels who have fallen from a scorched heaven
on to a scorched earth where they are burned into ash statues while reaching for gods help. The moon is red
because it is a "reflection" of the burning heaven & earth...burning from the "war" of heaven & hell...thus "OF
WAR AND REFLECTION". Dave started it & I finished it.
WHAT IS SOME OF THE LYRICAL CONTENT ON THIS RELEASE? WHO WRITES THE MAJORITY
OF THE MUSIC OR IS IT A WHOLE BAND COLLABORATION?
Ross W. wrote all the lyrics & did a great job. Most of them shine a light on the evils of all existence both fiction
YOU WORKED WITH SEASONED ENGINEER/PRODUCER ERIC RACHEL (BLACK DAHLIA
MURDER) HOW WAS IT WORKING WITH HIM?
Ross W. Recommended him because HOW IT ENDS did their first record with him. Eric Rachel is the real deal.
I couldn't be happier with his work. He is the perfect engineer/producer & a great guy to boot. I hope to work
with him again.
DO YOU GUYS PLAY OUT LIVE A LOT? WHERE ARE SOME OF THE PLACES YOU'VE PLAYED &
WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU'VE SHARED THE STAGE WITH?
We played out a lot till about 2 years ago when we began the long process of creating "OF WAR AND
REFLECTION". Our first show in two years is Saturday April 1st in Lemoyne, Pa...get your asses out to the
show. Check out all our previous & future shows on our website. We have supported TESTAMENT,
OBITUARY, VITAL REMAINS, SIX FEET UNDER, M.O.D., DYING FETUS, SKINLESS to name the
ARE THERE ANY REALLY INTERESTING OR FUNNY BAND STORIES YOU COULD SHARE WITH
The one that comes to mind was a show in Delaware with our good friends in VON KULL. Those guys kept
giving Rob, our drummer, Red Bull with Yeager quad-shots. Rob drank like 6 of them. He was so AMPED & out
of his mind. After the show...Jasin, our bassist, was standing on the lift gate of our bus (about 3 feet off the
pavement) & Rob at full sprint jumped up & grabbed Jasin & they both flew to the ground & they actually
bounced! We spent the next 5 hours in the ER.
HAVE ANY LABELS SHOWN SOME INTEREST IN THE TENTH CIRCLE? IF SO, WHO?
Yes. Larger Indies who shall remain nameless. Lets just say, although they haven't presented us with an
exceptable offer, there still time for them to do so.
WE ARE BOTH PART OF THE PENNSYLVANIA UNDERGROUND SCENE. WHO DO YOU THINK
ARE SOME OF THE BETTER BANDS, LABELS & ZINES FROM PA.?
There are a lot of real good bands in Pa. I don't want to mention any because I know I will forget some & I
don't want them to get upset. I don't know any good record labels based in Pa...but I'm sure there must be a few.
ARE YOU INTO ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC BESIDES WHAT YOU GUYS PLAY? WHO ARE
SOME OF THE BANDS YOU HAVE CURRENTLY BEEN LISTENING TO?
I listen to almost anything except for Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B & Country/Western. My favorite band of all time is
LED ZEPPELIN. I also listen to Joe Satriani a lot. Now that I have my Sirius radio I listen to channel 27 Hard
Attack all day & night...so I am hearing a ton of new & old Metal.
WHAT DO THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND DO WHEN NOT DOING ANY WORK FOR THE BAND?
JOBS, HOBBIES, ETC?
Jasin, Dave & Ross W. all have regular 9-5 M-F day jobs. Jasin & Ross W. are into video games as their
hobbies. Dave spends most of his hobbie time writing & home recording. I spend almost every minute on the
band. You name it & I'm doing it.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST ALBUM YOU REMEMBER BUYING? WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT
YOU REMEMBER SEEING?
I think my first album was the popular KISS record (I was like 4 or 5 & didn't know what I was thinking). My
first real album was LED ZEPPLIN IV (need I say more). My first concert was VAN HALEN 1984, I was like
8 & was totally blown away. Eddie was the man.
WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?
I only had sex with only 6 different women. Just for the record...ZERO men, animals, kids, blow up dolls.
WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING NEXT FROM THE TENTH CIRCLE?
Hopefully a tour. Just need a great permanent drummer.
WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE ANSWERING THIS INTERVIEW? WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW
THAT IT'S DONE?
Working on artwork for our up coming advertising campaign. Go back to it.
