THE THING (R)
UNIVERSAL PICTURES (2011)
Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen & more.
Even though this film has the same name as John Carpenter's 1982 film, it is not a remake, but more of
a prequel. It follows the story of a team of Norwegian scientists who find an alien ship frozen deep in
the ice in Antarctica. An organism inside the ship awakens and then starts going on a killing spree. The
problem is that the thing tends to take over the peoples bodies and then do the killing, then kills off it's
host. The other problem for the scientist is that they don't know who is infected by the creature. The
remaining scientists and crew must now rally together to fight the creatures. I am a big fan of the
original, so I wasn't sure how this one would live up to the original. The people who worked on this
film captures the same feel of paranoia, suspense, fear & Horror of john Carpenter's original. You also
felt the strong sense of claustrophobia by being trapped in the middle of the arctic and no way of
escaping. A perfect example of a Horror & Sci-Fi hybrid movie along with the ALIEN films and the
original THE THING film. This is a must see for all Horror fans, and even non Horror fans, which
will hopefully be a starting point for them to go towards Horror!
