"IN THE SHADOW OF SWORDS"
"IN THE SHADOW OF SWORDS" is the follow up to "WITNESS TO THE
DOWNFALL" from Chicago's TRIALS. TRIALS is back and better than ever. These guys
are and extreme Metal band, but find themselves to be hard to place in one genre. Their
sound is very aggressive, but with melodic parts mixed through out. They blend together
old school & new school Metal influences to help create their sound. You can hear a strong
Thrash Metal style to their music, that has a lot of groove and technical parts with some
straight up shredding. Then they inject a lot of Death Metal elements, especially in the
faster more aggressive parts and in some of the vocals. Then they throw in some spastic
and heavy Metalcore parts as well. I also kind of felt a Southern Sludge Metal vibe that
covered a lot of their sound too. I think this was more present in the slower more drawn out
spots. Mark Sugar's vocal style follows a lot of the same path as the music. He will go with
a lower Death growl at times and then head into a grooved out Thrash vocal style and then
right into a melodic Sludge Metal sound. I loved the way these guys blended all these styles
together and how smoothly they did it. If your dig bands like KINGDOM OF SORROW,
LAMB OF GOD & CROWBAR mixed with DEATH, SYLOSIS, REVOCATION &
even some good old PANTERA! With a blend of the above bands, how can you go wrong?
You can't and TRIALS is the proof! Pick this one up and blast the grooved out heaviness
that is "IN THE SHADOWS OF SWORDS".
