Interview by Burt Wolf with Pedro, guitarist for UNREAL OVERFLOWS.
Interview done January 13th, 2006.
I KNOW YOU GUYS ARE A FAIRLY NEW BAND TO THE UNDERGROUND SCENE, BUT CAN YOU GIVE US A BIT OF THE HISTORY OF THE BAND SO FAR? HOW YOU GOT TOGETHER? ANY PREVIOUS BANDS MEMBERS WERE IN?
UNREAL OVERFLOWS arose whne Fran (guitars, ex-ABSORBED), Jorge (drums & I took seperate ways from our old partners, with the purpose of begining a new musical project. At the beginning of 2002, Victor took on the voices & later Zoilo joined in at bass. In summer of 2003 we recorded some of the themes in a local studio. The result: "POINT OF A NEW DEPARTURE", an auto produced demo of pure technical Death Metal, which was quickly promoted & distributed through fanzines & discography companies. At the end of the same year, Victor decied to leave the band. We decided not to look for another vocalist & Zoilo was the one who undertook the vocals. In January of 2004, the band recieved an offer from Xtreme Music, which was negotiated & accepted for the edition of the debut album. In autumn 2004, we have recieved SpaceLab Studio confirmation of the dates to record our first album in the German studio.

WHY WAS THE NAME UNREAL OVERFLOWS CHOSEN AS THE BANDS NAME?
It was one of the many names we have in the list of choices. It was the one that best sounded to our ears & I think it defines a bit the idea of the style we have in mind to do.

WHO OR WHAT HAVE HAD SOME INFLUENCES ON YOUR LIFE & IN MUSIC?

I was born & grew up when my village was one of the most important points of the Heavy - Rock scene of the 80's in my country, so it is clear that this influenced my life & my musical taste. Musically, the band I love in my childhood was
METALLICA (before "LOAD") & I think it marked my compositions many years. But, I'm sure the greatest influences over my music have been & continue being, my band mates.

HOW WOULD YOU BEST DESCRIBE THE STYLE & SOUND OF YOUR MUSIC, BEING AS YOU ARE NOT THE TYPICAL SOUNDING DEATH METAL BAND?
I think the style of
UNREAL OVERFLOWS is not more than the addition of the styles of each member. Four heads think better than only one, the writing process is more difficult, but the result is better. I could define our style as brutal-technical-progressive-hardcore Death Metal, je! We do not search that all songs were the same, an assorted album is better than to listen to the same track nine or ten times.

I HAVE YOUR DEMO CD "POINT OF A NEW DEPARTURE" THAT CAME OUT AWHILE AGO. HOW WELL HAS THIS ALBUM DONE FOR YOU GUYS? HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN TO IT?
We began putting out the demo at the end of 2003 & since then we haven't stopped sending it, since it is having very good feedbacks constantly. To be honest, we do not expect that. This is our first demo & it was recoreded in our free time. The sound is not great for us, although it is enough for being a first recording. We are very pleased with the success that this demo is bringing us.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN THE COVER ART A LITTLE BIT & WHO DID IT?
The cover picture is an ultrasound scan & it symbolizes the then birth of
UNREAL OVERFLOWS. Fran is the father of the idea (& the father of the baby too) as a result of the title, which we had in mind already. The person in charge to capture the idea of Fran was me. I did the entire booklet art work & I am going to do it again with the new album.
WHICH UNREAL OVERFLOWS SONG WOULD YOU SAY BEST REPRESENTS THE BAND & WHY?
I think "The Unavoidable Passage Of Time". It has all we think that a song must have: technique, aggressiveness, melody... It has all the qualities of each one of us & it is very difficult to capture all this in one song.

THIS RELEASE WAS PUT OUT BY XTREEM MUSIC PRODUCTIONS. HOW DID YOU GET HOOKED UP WITH THEM & HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH THEM?
This demo is not being distributed by
XTREEM MUSIC, but by ourselves. We sent copies to the entire world & one arrived at XTREEM's mailbox, of course. Dave listened to it, he liked it & he offered us a contract.

YOU HAVE JUST FINISHED RECORDING YOUR NEW ALBUM "ARCHETECTURE OF INCOMPREHENSION" RECENTLY. HAS THIS ALBUM BEEN RELEASED YET? WILL IT BE PUT OUT BY XTREEM MUSIC PRODUCTIONS?
The new album is not released yet, but we count on it will hit the streets early this year.
XTREEM MUSIC does take care of the publishing & the release of this album.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY THIS ALBUM DIFFERS FROM YOUR LAST RELEASE?
This album is the continuation of the style defined in the demo songs & which have had more than good feedbacks. The difference is in the professional production of this album. This one has been recorded in the SpaceLab Studio (
EVERON, WOLVERINE, AVULSED, ANGEL...) & mastering in Germany to, by Peter Neuber (CALLENISH CIRCLE...)

WHAT IS SOME OF THE LYRICAL CONTENT IN YOUR SONGS?
The lyrics talk about the human mind, about feelings, about the loneliness of the people in contemporary society, about the role we play in this world on incomprehension. Each lyric depends on the state of mind of the person at the time of writing it.

DOES UNREAL OVERFLOWS PLAY OUT A LOT? WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU'VE SHARED THE STAGE WITH? WHERE ARE SOME OF THE PLACES YOU'VE PLAYED?
Unfortunately, we play out nothing.... One gig in two years! This is something we are working on in order to change it urgently. We have had many offers but, because of several reasons, we find ourselves forced to refuse ones & to cancel others in the last few hours. Now that we have the album finished & we are more relaxed, we hope to play more gigs, since there are many people eager to see us live.

ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING OR FUNNY BAND STORIES THAT STICK OUT THAT YOU COULD SHARE WITH US?
In an open air festival, during the sound checking, our drummer, Jorge, got on stage to watch the drum that he had being set up. The sound engineer expected that all six bands would play on the same drum kit & without moving anything! In that moment the microphones had been checked & it could be hear in the yard. He said "this is fucking shit!!! I won't play on it!!! We were in stiches & the owner of the drums was beside us looking at us with an angry face. Finally, we could set up our drum kit & we showed them why we need a drum in good conditions!

ARE YOU INTO ANY OTHER STYLES OF MUSIC BESIDES WHAT YOU PLAY? WHO ARE SOME OF THE BANDS YOU HAVE CURRENTLY BEEN LISTENING TO?
A few years ago, I played in a Classic Rock band in a 70's style, but I did not stay there more that two or three months, because I did not feel easy with the music. Actually, I think that I do not like anything apart from Metal. I listen to everything from
SATRIANI to NAPALM DEATH, but other styles, Rock, Pop, Dance...say nothing to me. (I do not bear in mind the Jazz, this is a world apart that I consider every musician should visit). The bands that I have been listening to yesterday evening are CARNIVAL IN COAL - "COLLECTION PRESTIGE", I love thiese two French guys, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN - "IRONY IS A DEAD SCENE EP" & ATHEIST - "ELEMENTS" since these three CDs have just been re-released.
WHO ARE SOME OF THE BETTER BANDS, LABELS & ZINES FROM SPAIN?
There are many good bands in Spain, not well know, but very interesting musically.
AVULSED, SCENT OF DEATH, CONTINUO RENACER, THE HERETIC, ANVIL OF DOOM (I don't like the album very much, but they are amazing live). The most important label is XTREEM MUSIC, but there are many more that have important bands in their lines, like MONDONGO CANIVAL, BLOODY PRODUCTIONS, NECROMANCE RECORDS, HECATOMBE RECORDS, etc. Many of these labels have their own magazines or webzines. Other good zines are FRIEDHOF MAGAZINE, THE EXECUTIONER, METAL FOREVER, etc.

WHAT DO THE MEMBERS OF THE BAND DO WHEN NOT DOING ANY WORK FOR THE BAND? JOBS, HOBBIES, ETC.?
The three of us work eight or ten hours per day & I study at the University, so we try to spend the little free time we have with our girlfriends (wife & daughter in Fran's case). Personally, I like to cook & play like a child with the design programs on the computer. Currently I am working on the movie we recorded during the making of the album.

WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT ABOUT YOU?
I like very much
TRIANA (Spanish Flamenco Rock band of the 70's) I don't know why, but I like this band. In the rest of the aspects I think I have nothing unusual.

WHAT WAS THE FIRST ALBUM YOU REMEMBER BUYING? WHAT WAS THE FIRST CONCERT YOU EVER ATTENDED?
I think it was the "PIECE OF MIND" of
IRON MAIDEN on cassette, but I'm not sure because I got rid of all of them. My first great concert (not local bands) was KREATOR, DIMMU BORGIR, KRISIUM & CANKER, very close to my village.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE NEXT FROM UNREAL OVERFLOWS?
Many gigs, I hope. We have one the next February 11th with
ZUBROWSKA (Fra), MISTWEAVER (Spa) & LABIANCA (Por). I think the new album will be in stores in a couple of months & we are going to continue working to offer to all the Death Metal fans the best of our music. We want to progress, but be sure that we will keep close to the technical Death Metal style.

WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE ANSWERING THIS INTERVIEW? WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW THAT IT'S OVER?
I am doing this interview in the University library, during my free time, so it is easy to imagine what I am going to do when I have finished & more bearing in mind that the exams are around the corner.

THANX A LOT FOR ANSWERING THIS INTERVIEW. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD ANYTHING TO CLOSE OUT FEEL FREE!
Nothing more Burt. Thanks a lot for the interview & for giving us the chance to make
UNREAL OVERFLOWS known to all the BEOWOLF readers.
