HORROR MOVIE REVIEWS (April 2011)
|
BLACK WATER (R) SONY PICTURES (2007)
Starring: Diana Glenn, Maeve Dermody, Andy Rodoreda, Ben Oxenbould, Fiona Press & more.
This film is based off of true events and is a story about man versus beast. The story follows three vacationers
on a small boat trip in Northern Australia's mangrove swamps. As they travel deeper into the swamps they
encounter some ferocious crocodiles. The crocodiles start to attack the boat and the guide is knocked into the
water. He is eaten alive and then the boat gets over turn. The three vacationers must now swim for their lives.
They do what they can to stay alive, by climbing in trees, but they need to get the boat right side up and get out
of there. Not everyone makes it out alive. This was a highly intense film and made you feel as if you were
trapped right there with them. One of the best wild animal Horrors I've seen, probably cause it's a true story

BLOOD SURF (R) TRIMARK PICTURES (2000)
Starring: Dax Miller, Kate Fischer, Duncan Regehr, Matthew Borlenghi, Joel West & more.
A group of surfers and film maker head down to Australia for some surfing. They plan on filming themselves
doing the latest extreme sport called Blood Surfing. This is where they fill the shark infested waters with bloody
chum to add an extra thrill to the surfing experience. The trip starts out like any typical surfing trip. The guys
test the waves for a couple of regular runs. They feel it out for the sharks and then dump in the chum to get the
sharks amped up. What they didn't expect was another large creature to come into the picture. Now the sharks
aren't as big as a threat as they thought. This film was OK as far as a wild creature Horror film goes, but the
acting was horrible and you couldn't wait for them all to die. The creature effects were a little weak as well, but it
was meant more to be just a fun viewing.
DEAD AIR (R) ANTHEM PICTURES (2009)

continues to take calls from people who are struggling to stay alive amongst all the chaos and mayhem. The

DORM OF THE DEAD (R) STRATOSPHERE ENTERTAINMENT (2006)
Starring: Ciara Richards, Adrianna Eder, Jackey Hall, Tiffany Shepis, Andrea Ownbey & more.
Clare and Julie are two really snotty girls at the college and they hold a grudge against two Goth girls named
Sarah and Allison. They are always tormenting them and trying to make them look stupid in front of the rest of
the school, but in return make them look like the dumb ones. Some strange event happens and a Zombie
invasion on the campus begins. Clare tries to make the Goth girls the next victims, but then they all must work
together to survive. The movie is low budget and done a little cheesy. They do a lot of the typical cliché things
in the majority of Horror films. All you want to happen is for them to be eaten and the Zombies to kill
everyone. Not one of the better Zombie flicks out there, but worth one viewing.

LAKE DEAD (R) AFTER DARK HORRORFEST (2007)
Starring: Alex A. Quinn, Kelsey Crane, Jim Devoti, Kelsey Wedeen, Tara Gerard & more.
Three sisters along with some friends head to their grandfathers home after his passing. They are hoping to gain
the grandfather's inheritance and spend the money on useless junk. Once they arrive to the lake house they find a
backwoods family that is leaving in the home. They come off as the car takers for the place and welcome the
girls and their friends in. What they soon come to find out is these people aren't who they seem to be. The are a
murderous family who is set out to torture and kill them all. This was a pretty decent Horror flick with the
crazy psycho family of killers. Some of the friends are the usual really annoying type and you just keep rooting
for them to kill hacked up. Some pretty cool death scenes with lots of gore. Check this killer low budget Horror
movie out!
THE BEAST WITHIN (R) UNITED ARTISTS (1982)
Starring: Ronny Cox, Bibi Besch, Paul Clemens, Don Gordon, R.G. Armstrong & more.
Shortly after a young couple is recently married the wife gets brutally raped outside of Mississippi. This was a
hairy man like creature who was never found. She decides to go through with the pregnancy and have the baby.
She gives birth to a baby boy. The kid grows up normal until he turns seventeen. The teen starts to have some
weird changes inside his body. The family returns to Mississippi to try and find some answers. They uncover a
small town that has a deep dark secrets that they want it to stay that way. This is another one of those 80's
movies that played off the Werewolf genre. It's not one of the better ones from that time, but it's still a decent
flick and worth watching, especially if you like the Werewolf type films.
THE RITE (PG-13) NEW LINE CINEMA (2011)
Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Colin O'Donoghue, Alicia Braga, Ciaran Hinds, Rutger Hauer & more.
A young Catholic priest has his doubts and believes that demonic possession is all just superstitious rumours
and hear say. He travels to Rome to study at the Vatican where they are teaching classes on demonic possession.
Shortly after he is placed with Father Lucas, played by Anthony Hopkins who is a strong believer and has
witnessed it first hand. He takes the young man under his wing and out in the field to help him with exorcisms so
the priest can experience it for himself. These exorcisms become to real and also makes him face the demons up
close and personal. I'm not a big fan of the religious type films, but anything with Anthony Hopkins is going to
be good. This is one of the best films of this genre done in the vein of THE EXORCIST.

THE SCREWFLY SOLUTION (TV-MA) SHOWTIME NETWORKS (2006)
Starring: Jason Priestly, Kerry Norton, Linda Darlow, Brenna O'Brien, Steve Lawlor & more.
In this episode of the great Showtime series MASTERS OF HORROR director Joe Dante (THE HOWLING)
gives us a chilling story of man and insect. Jason Priestly and Elliot Gould are scientist who are trying to
uncover the reason for the libido of men across the globe has turned into homicidal rage. All over the men are
killing the woman and the corpses just keep pilling up. These scientist need to find a reason why this is
happening and put end to it before the whole female population is whipped out. They turn to the mating habits
of the screwfly for the answers. This is a weird one in these episodes, but what else would you expect from the

THE TELLING (R) BREAKOUT ENTERTAINMENT (2009)
Starring: Holly Madison, Christina Rosenberg, Nicole Zeoli, Najarra Townsend, Wesley Stiller & more.
Three college girls want to pledge for a popular, but deadly sorority they must first pace the initiation. One of
the things they have to do for their initiation is tell the most horrific story they know. Each of the three girls
proceed to tell their stories one at a time. The three stories include a homicidal doll, an undead film crew
directing a fading actress and a hunting expedition gone wrong that ends in death. While each of the girls gets
involved in telling their stories some unknown person is going around and killing the girls of the sorority. This
was trying to be like a CREEPSHOW type film with little stories all pieced together. It wasn't too bad, the girls
were hot to watch, but for a great anthology Horror type film you should watch TRICK R TREAT!
THE V WORD (TV-MA) SHOWTIME NETWORKS (2006)
Starring: Arjay Smith, Branden Nadon, Jodelle Ferland, Lynda Boyd, Michael Ironside & more.
Two kids decided to break into a mortuary and mess around. They start searching through all the bodies inside
looking for some personal possessions. As they are roaming through the bodies the unknowingly let loose a
vampire. The vampire is once again alive and out for blood. His first two victims are the kids who broke in.
They try to escape but they soon get attacked and slowly turn into vampires themselves. I'm not a huge fan of
the vampire genre so I wasn't really into this episode, but it still holds the creepy, Horror, blood and gore aspect
that most of the other stories in this series does. Even though I wasn't too into it, it was still a decent story none
the less.
