DAY OF THE DEAD (R) MILLENNIUM FILMS (2008) Starring: Mena Savari, Nick Cannon, Matt Rippy, Michael Welch, Anna Lynne McCord & more. This is a remake of the classic zombie flick of the same name. But it can't really be called a remake, because it really didn't have any similarities to the original. The other funny thing is most of the movie takes place at night & not during the day. A small town is over run by the zombie invasion & everyone starts to panic as they are killed & then return to life as zombies. These zombies are fast & run after their victims, plus they for some reason can scale walls at amazing speeds & heights almost like spider-man. The film was actually pretty decent though. There was enough good & surprises with lots of killings & little plot, which is expected from most horror movies. They should have called something else, because it's misleading to George Romero fans. www.DAYOFTHEDEAD.jp
EYE OF THE BEAST (NR) RHI ENTERTAINMENT (2007) Starring: James Van Der Beek, Arne MacPherson, Alexandera Castillo, Ryan Black, Tom Anniko & more. I believe this was actually a made for TV movie on the Sci-Fi channel. James Van Der Beek is a scientist who is sent to a small fishing town to investigate why the waters that were so abundant with fish are now very empty. The local fisher men are losing their business because of the lack of fish. Some of them have claimed to continue their investigation people are starting to disappear as well as the creature starts to hit the shore lines. They eventually head out to try & capture or kill the creature to end the situation. The story was a little weak in a lot of parts & it's hard to believe the Dawson's Creek guy as a scientist, but it was done in the old classic style of the giant creature movies in the 50's & 60's. I've always enjoyed those, so this one was watchable!
FINGERPRINTS (R) IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT (2006) Starring: Leah Pipes, Kristin Cavallari, Josh Henderson, Andrew Lawrence, Lou Diamond Phillips & more. A small town is haunted by someone or something from the towns past. When a bad girl from the town starts to investigate, she starts getting some signs of who could be behind the killings & haunting. She starts to see hand prints & finger prints appearing on windows & glass through out the town. There is a legend that if you park your car on the train tracks that run through town, that some mysterious thing will push the car off the tracks. This is unless you are a very bad person, then the car won't move at all. This fact plays a major part in the unveiling of the story. This was more of a who done it story mixed with a ghost story & a teen horror flick. It was actually pretty decent if you like these kinds of films & kind of had a surprise twist at the end. It was a different take on the whole haunting ghost story type films.
FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 8: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN (R) PARAMOUNT (1989) Starring: Kane Hodder, Todd Caldecott, Peter Mark Richman, Tiffany Paulson, Jensen Daggett & more In this 8th installment of the FRIDAY series Jason heads out to New York City. Although, 90% of the film Jason isn't in Manhattan. He stows away on a boat that is taking a bunch of school kids on a trip to New York City. As he's on the ship the usual things happen that would normally happen at Camp Crystal Lake. A bunch of teens engage in sexual actions, doing drugs & drinking. Jason takes them out one by one in his very unique ways. I actually like this film a lot & enjoyed the stuff on the boat the most. I think when he is in New York it kind of ruins the whole creepiness of Jason. There are some really cool, bloody death scenes & killings done by the best person to play Jason & that's Kane Hodder. The title is misleading, but the film is great! www.FRIDAYTHE13THfilms.com
GINGER SNAPS 2: UNLEASHED (R) LIONS GATE FILMS (2004) Starring: Emily Perkins, Tatiana Maslany, Eric Johnson, Katharine Isabelle, Pascale Hutton & more. This film pretty much takes place after the events in the first film. Emily Perkins character is placed in a kind of a hallway house for troubled girls. She is considered a drug addict, cause she keeps injecting herself with this drug to stop the hunger for the flesh from the werewolf bite she got from her sister in the first film. She is also being treated horribly by the other girls in the house, except one. The two of them escape to a secure cabin in the woods that used to be the girls grand mothers. They get hunted down & have a stand off with the werewolf. This is as good as the first one & had a lot more action & is one of the better teen werewolf movies. www.GINGERSNAPSthemovie.com
LAKE PLACID 2 (UR) 20TH CENTURY FOX (2007) Starring: John Sshnieder, Sarah Lafleur, Sam McMurray, Chad Collins, Alicia Ziegler & more. This second film was originally made for TV, but this is the unrated version that has lots of gore & blood. Another group of people head to Lake Placid where a huge alligator is coming up on land & attacking people & mauling them to death & eating them. The film stars John Schnieder from the DUKES OF HAZZARD. He is a sheriff of the area & tries to hunt down the gator along with a big game hunter who wants it for his trophy. A bunch of young adults party & swim in the lake & are eating one by one. More people get killed & are ripped to shreds by the gator. This one had more gore, but the story in the first one was much better. There is a lot of CGI work, that kind of distracts, but this is still another one of those great giant creature films. Just make sure you watch the unrated version!
PHANTASM (R) MGM/UNITED ARTIST (1979) Starring: Reggie Bannister, A. Michael Baldwin, Angus Scrimm, Bill Thornbury, Kathy Lester & more. This one is a classic that I'm sure most of you have seen already, but I just recently watched it again & wanted to give it some respect! A young boy is riding his bike near a funeral home & he watches a funeral in progress. into the funeral home at night & sees these little creatures running about. The Tall Man finds the boy & starts after him. The kid escapes & goes to get his brother & friends to come back with him. This is when all the more strangeness starts happening & the killing begins. This has some of the strangest twists in a Horror film. There isn't much on the gore, but the sphere killings alone are worth it. Check out this classic if you haven't seen it! www.PHANTASM.com
SEVERANCE (R) MAGNOLIA PICTURES (2006) Starring: Danny Dyer, Laura Harris, Juli Drajko, Judit Viktor, Toby Stephens & more. A group of office workers for a weapons company do a company weekend retreat to try & boost mural & team work. They head out to a small house in the backwoods to relax & have a company meeting. The road gets blocked & they must continue on foot to the house. They starts experiencing & hearing some strange things. Once they reach the house they tell a tale of some crazed military people who supposedly still exist in a practice place for weapons testing. They soon find out this is for real as each of them are slaughtered in some bloody ways. This film combines a lot of comedy & horror that works extremely well. This is a highly recommended film & deserve a lot more attention then it ever got! I loved this flick! www.SEVERANCEfilm.com
SHROOMS (R) CAPITOL FILMS (2006) Starring: Lindsay Haun, Jack Hutson, Max Kasch, Maya Hazen, Alice Greczyn & more. SHROOMS follows a group of young adults who head out to the backwoods in Ireland for a weekend of partying. They see some strange backwoods folks along their journey & get kind of freaked out. Once they hit their camp ground they find out why they are in the area they are. The one guy informs them that this are grows the best mushrooms for one month a year that sell for a lot of money cause they really mess you up & send you on a trip that you can distinguish between reality & fantasy. The only thing is you can't eat the black ones cause they make you crazy. This happens to one of the girls & her friends start turning up dead. Is it all just a really bad trip or is this really all happening? A dumb name for a Horror flick, but a very cool movie! www.SHROOMSthemovie.com
THE MIST (R) DIMENSION FILMS (2007) Starring: Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher, Toby Jones & more This a bit different for a Stephen King film. This film mixes Horror, Suspense & Sci-Fi all together. A small New England town is over run by a sudden mist storm that has blanketed the town. All these weird noises are coming from within the mist. A bunch of the towns folk hide out in a the local supermarket to protect themselves. Some try to escape & are killed once they enter the mist. A bunch of mutated crazy looking creatures start emerging from the mist & attacking & killing the towns people. It turns out it was some government experiment gone wrong where they opened a portal to another world & all the creatures are entering our world to feed. This was a great flick that had a lot of suspense, energy & a great story! What else would you expect from a master story teller like Stephen King! www.THEMIST-movie.com
