HORROR MOVIE REVIEWS (February 2009)
|
BAD MOON (R) WARNER BROS. (1996)
Starring: Mariel Hemingway, Michael Pare, Mason Gamble, Ken Pogue, Hrothear Mathews & more.
Michael Pare is a photojournalist who was attacked by a werewolf on an assignment, but has kept this a
secret from everyone. He has nowhere to turn so he heads to his sisters house. She is a single mother raising
right with him. They are being threatened to sell their land by some land developers. Things turn very ugly &
his secret eventually comes to surface has he tries to help protect his family. This was a really cheesy type
werewolf movie, that had no real Horror movie aspects & was more of a thriller action type movie that just
had a werewolf in it. It could have been pretty much done if the main character was just a normal guy!
DANCE OF THE DEAD (R) GHOSTHOUSE UNDERGROUND (2008)
Starring: Jared Kusnitz, Greyson Chadwick, Chandler Darby, Carissa Capobianco, Randy McDowell & more.
Geeks & gore collide in this tongue in cheek type Horror Comedy film. It has some vibes like the great
SHAUN OF THE DEAD, but not as good. The living dead attack a small town, the night of the schools
senior prom. The only ones who realize what's going on are the geeks & losers who couldn't even get dates
very fun entertaining movie that had a great balance of comedy & gore mixed in one. It reminded me of a lot
of the teen Horror flicks of the 90's, but was done a lot better, with more gore, comedy, better acting & a
better script!

HAIR EXTENSIONS (R) MEDIA BLASTERS (2007)
Starring: Chiaki Kuriyama, Ren Osugi, Megumi Sato, Tsugumi, Eri Machimoto & more.
A mortician discovers that a girl's mutilated corpse continues to grow extreme amounts of hair. He sells the
hair to a beauty salon to use for hair extensions. The dead girl's spirit has cursed the hair, because of the
violent way she died. The hair starts attacking the people who use it or come into contact with it. As the
mortician keeps cutting the girls hair more & more continues to grow back & we are slowly revealed how
the girl died. This sounds like a crazy story, but it's actually a very cool concept, done quit well, with some
killer special effects & some really bizarre death scenes. One of the best Japanese Horror films out there.

HEMOGLOBIN (R) PLATINUM DISC (1997)
Starring: Rutger Hauer, Gillian Ferrabee, Pascal Gruselle, Roy Dupulis, Kristin Lehman & more.
John Strauss is suffering from a life threatening genetic disorder & has not been able to find any help as to
what is wrong. He searches his family tree to try & find the root of the illness. He discovers something that
takes him & his wife to a remote island off the coast of Maine that is plagued with mutated freaks. Here he
uncovers more of his families past & the reason behind his illness. This was a little bit bizarre & had a really
weird plot to it. It wasn't really scary or anything, but it had that strange feel to it like the GHOULIES or
CRITTERS type movies from the 80's. Strange & interesting enough for at least one viewing, but not one I
would watch over & over again.
MY BLOODY VALENTINE IN 3D (R) LIONSGATE (2009)
Starring: Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, Kerr Smith, Betsy Rue, Edi Gathegi & more.
Tom returns home to a small mining town to find some closure, because of the massacre that happened there
on Valentines Day a decade prior. The town starts to become in an uproar as the bodies starts to pile up
again. The killings have started again & everyone becomes suspicious of Tom. He wants to sell off the
mines, that his father owned, but it is the towns life blood. This remake was done quite well & in some ways
tops the original. I did see it in 3D & that actually helped with the experience of this being better. They
added some stuff, but it was only to fill out the film & make it much more violent & gory. This is one of the
better remakes in years!

RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP (R) MAGNOLIA PICTURES (2008)
Starring: Vincent Pastore, Michael Gibney, Paul Deangelo, Jonathan Tiersten, Isaac Hayes & more.
I was very excited to hear there was going to be another SLEEPAWAY CAMP film, but highly disappointed
when I saw this film. This is a series that could have gone on to become one of the better franchise, but has
gotten worst with each new sequel. A bunch of new bratty kids are staying at the campground where several
years before a girl named Angela slaughtered a bunch of people. All the people in this were annoying &
horrible that you just couldn't wait to watch them die, so you didn't have to see them anymore. There was
one cool death scene where a girl is trapped on a bottom bunk bed & a bed of nails is smashed down on top
of her.

THE DENTIST (R) TRIMARK PICTURES (1996)
Starring: Corbin Bernsen, Linda Hoffman, Michael Stadvec, Ken Foree, Tony Noakes & more.
Dr. Feinstone is a successful Beverly Hills dentist. He discovers that his wife is cheating on him with their
pool boy. He straps her in a chair & performs a horrific oral surgery on her to disfigure her. He then
proceeds to kill the pool boy as well. From there he just snaps & loses his mind. He heads out to work & his
employees, just can tell some things not right. As his patients keep filing in he does some strange & bizarre
stuff yo each & everyone of them. From there he turns on his staff until one of them fights back & tries to
stop the psycho dentist. This was done with a little black humor behind it, but had that odd 80's type
slasher psycho killer vibe to it. If your a fan of the films like this from the 80's then you'll dig this film as
well!
THE LOST BOYS (R) WARNER BROS. (1987)
Starring: Jason Patric, Corey Haim, Dianne Wiest, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz & more.
This is one of those films that has become a cult classic in the Horror genre, but I never really understood
why. I recently watched it again & couldn't really figure it out. It's about a family that moves to a small
California coastal town. The boardwalk is plagued with vampires, but no one really knows about them. Lots
of kids go missing, but still no one can figure it out. One of the new kids gets pulled into the inner circle, by
Star (Jaimie Gertz). She latter feels bad about it once they start to transform him into a vampire as well.
There is a decent story & some good comedic parts, but no real gore or Horror. Corey Feildmans character is
highly annoying all through out. It's an over all decent film, but I still can't figure out why it has become
such a huge classic!
UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCONS (R) SCREEN GEMS (2009)
Starring: Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Rhona Mitra, Steven Mackintosh, Kevin Grevioux & more.
This is the 3rd installment in the UNDERWORLD series, but it's actually a prequel to the other two films.
This one follows the story of the secret love between Sonja & Lucian that was hinted to in the first film.
This is what really sparked the battle between the Vampires & the Lycans. The vampires had captured &
used the Lycans as slaves to do their labor through out their empire. With the secret love being revealed the
Lycans start to fight back & the war begins. It's the story of Romeo & Juliet again, but with Vampires &
Werewolfs. It was done the same as the originals, but it seemed like something was missing, maybe cause we
know the ending!

WICKED LAKE (R) ELEVEN ARTS (2008)
Starring: Carlee Baker, Frank Birney, Michael Esparza, Eryn Joslyn, Will Keenan & more.
Four beautiful women retreat to a mountain lake cabin for a weekend of fun. Their holiday is disrupted by
some creepy admires who crash their little get away. They start harassing the ladies, but once the clock
strikes midnight things start to change. The women become the ones in control once a mysterious power is
released. The intruders now must fight to stay alive as the blood thirsty beauties start attacking & torturing
them. This was a different kind of twist one a demonic possession & vampire type genre film. It was slow
at first, but then kicked in as the story progressed. The soundtrack is all done by Al Jergenson of
MINISTRY.
