HORROR MOVIE REVIEWS
(October 2008)
BATTLE ROYALE (R) STARMAX (2000)
Starring: Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Tare Yamamoto, Chiaki Kuriyama, Sosuke Takaoka & more.
In the not so distant future in Japan the country is over run with children out numbering adults. The of
children, drug them & take them to a remote island. Her they are randomly given numbers & bags with
becomes a contest of survival. The children must kill each other to be the last one to survive & go free. If
they try to escape or revolt they have collars that will explode & kill them instantly. There is a ton of
bloodshed, violence & tons of carnage. This is one of the best & original Japanese films I have seen in a long
time. I loved this film, cause it was well written, directed & kept you very much waiting for the next death
scene! I heard they are talking about making an American remake of it, but it won't be as good, I'm sure!
BATTLE ROYALE (R) TARTAN FILMS (2003)
Starring: Tatsuya Fujiwara, Ai Maeda, Shugo Oshinari, Ayana Sakai, Haruka Suenaga & more.
This is the sequel to the above film that takes place a few years after the end of the original. The winner of
the first
BATTLE ROYALE has returned & is once again placed in this new version. The concept has
changed a little bit this time around. The government sends out the new students to capture or kill some
rogue students who are rebelling against the government & the adults. This time they are equipped with
heavy artillery like machine guns, grenades & protective equipment to fend for themselves. They get
slaughtered as they arrive on shore, but the ones who survive infiltrate the compound & then soon partner
with hem to go after the adults. This one has a lot of bloody & violent scenes as well, but it's not as good as
the original. I liked it a lot, but thought the original had more original story & killing scenes. Check them
both out, cause they are cool flicks!

DEAD AND DEADER (R) THE SCI-FI CHANNEL (2006)
Starring: John Billingsley, Dean Cain, Guy Torry, Collen Camp, Susan Ward, Ellie Cornell & more.
This was originally a movie made for the Sci-Fi Channel, but released on DVD as an R rated film. The movie
follows a bunch of soldiers on a mission in some remote place who encounter a camp of the enemy. In this
camp they are doing experiments on insects. When the camp is destroyed one of the soldiers is bitten by one
of the insects & is infected with a virus. He attacks some of the others & kills them. The bodies are retruned
to the military base & examined. The soldiers come back to life as zombies & start attacking everyone on
base & infecting them & turning them into zombies as well. There is a bit of comedy mixed in with the
violence & gore. This is definitely a low budget film, but it was kind of campy & cheesy, but still fun to
watch. If you like 80's styled B Horror movies then you'll probably dig this one as well. Not the best zombie
flick, but definitely not the worst!
DIARY OF THE DEAD (R) DIMENSION EXTREME (2007)
Starring: Michelle Morgan, Joshua Close, Shawn Roberts, Amy Ciupak LaLonde, Joe Dinicol & more.
This is the newest in the "
DEAD" series by George A Ramero. In this one we follow a group of film
students who are making a Horror movie on the night of the zombie invasion. They hear about the attacks on
TV & radio & decide to head to some of the students homes to see if their families are OK. Along the way
they run into some zombies & fight them off, but some get attacked & killed. They hit a small town where
there is a group of people stocking up & arming themselves to go out & kill the zombies. Along the way, the
one student keeps filming everything for his documentary. They end up in a last stand off at one of the rich
kids parents mansion. This was a very good film, done in a teen Horror style & a little different from the
other "
DEAD" films. It's my least favorite of all, but it's still a great zombie flick from the zombie master!

FAIR HAIRED CHILD (R) SHOWTIME NETWORKS (2006)
Starring: Lori Petty, Lindsay Pulsipher, Jesse Haddock, William Samples, Ian A. Wallace & more.
An aging elderly couple kidnap a young girl & keep her locked up in the basement of their home. She
doesn't know why they are doing this & can't find any means of escape. She finds another young boy down
there who is hanging from a nuse. She saves him & tries to find out what he knows. He can't speak, but tries
to communicate with her. The parents are kidnapping children to feed to a creature that is in the basement.
She later finds out that the boy is the one that turns into the creature & needs to feed on humans to survive.
It turns out the parents made a deal with the devil to return their son to them after he drowned when he was
younger. They needed to sacrifice a certain number of humans by his 18th birthday! This was more
suspenseful than it was scary. A good story that kind of keeps you on edge a bit!

GOTHIC VAMPIRES FROM HELL (R) MUSIC VIDEO DISTRIBUTORS (2007)
Starring: Gina DeVettori, Mara Marini, Jessica Remmers, Augustin Bunnuel, Sariah Bishop & more.
This is a very low budget Horror film that follows a Gothic Metal band on their quest to get a record deal.
They enter a battle of the bands contest where the winners get a record contract with an independent record
label. The label is run by a very hot woman who has other ideas in mind with signing bands. It turns out that
the owner of the label & her employees are vampires & are looking for people to feed upon. She sees the
singer of the band as her mate & wants to turn him into one of their own, but the girls in the band, one being
his girlfriend have weird suspicions about the record deal & the girls who run the label. Very low budget,
bad acting & bad music all through out. It's worth one viewing, but after that I would never watch this again.
Not a great vampire flick at all, but I have seen a lot worst in the past!

RIPPER 2: LETTER FROM WITHIN (R) VELOCITY HOME ENT. (2004)
Starring: Erin Karpluk, Nicholas Irons, Mhairi Steen Bock, Jane Peachey, Daniel Coonan & more.
conditions. In this hospital they doctors are doing some special experiments on the patients to delve deeper
into their subconscious to help figure out their mental problems. The experiments are almost like a virtual
reality where all the patients can interact within each others minds. They are transported between their
reality & the virtual a lot through out the film. They are being stalked by someone who is posing as Jack
The Ripper in the virtual world. If they die in this virtual world they then die in real life. It's almost like
how
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is, where if you die in your dreams you die for real. This was a
pretty decent flick that had a lot of twist & turns & kept you guessing a lot. I liked the end of the film the
best! Check it out, but check out the first one for a little more insight to what is happening in this one!
SAN FRANPSYCHO (R) IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT (2006)
Starring: Joe Estevez, Jose Rosete, Todd Bridges, Eleni C Krimitos, Victor Zaragoza & more.
This is a low budget slasher flick about a killer on the loose in San Francisco that the media has dubbed the
"
SAN FRANPSYCHO". We follow a few of the paths of people in the film. One of the views is from a
news reporter who is covering the story & keeps getting closer & closer to the killer than she realizes.
Another is from the detective who is on the case & tracking this killer down. The third view is from the
killer himself & follows him on each of his kills. In the end all the people cross paths as the killer is revealed
& attacks the news reporter, who is then stopped by the detective. This is a story that has been done over
& over again & has been done a lot better than this one was done. The story was a bit weak, the acting was
even weaker & there was no real interesting death scenes or anything. Much better serial killer films to
watch out there than this one, but if you want to take a chance, you've been warned!
THE BLOB - (ORIGINAL) (PG) PARAMOUNT PICTURES (1958)
Starring: Steve McQuinn, Aneta Corsaut, Earl Rowe, Olin Howland, Alden Chase & more.
This is a classic Sci-Fi / Horror film from 1958 that I am sure most people have seen by now. I wasn't going
to review this, but decided to because of the remake below. Plus part of this movie was filmed right around
the corner from my house at the Colonial Theater here in Phoenixville, Pa. Also the movie just celebrated
it's 50th anniversary & I attended the annual
BLOBfest they have here. A meteor crashes to earth in the
backyard of an old farmer. He investigates it & some strange goo emerges & attacks him. It engulfs his arm
& inflicts pain. He is taken into town to the doctors where the thing starts to wreak havoc on the towns
folk. It covers everyone it can & grows larger & larger & stronger & stronger. The government is sent in to
destroy the thing! This is actually pretty good for it's time & still kind of holds up to this day. If you
haven't seen this classic yet, you must, especially before you see the remake!
THE BLOB (REMAKE) (R) TRISTAR PICTURES (1988)
Starring: Kevin Dillon, Shawnee Smith, Donovan Leitch, Jeffrey DeMunn, Candy Clark & more.
This is a remake of the above classic flick & this film has just celebrated it's 20th anniversary. This film
basically follows the same concept as the original. A meteor crashes to earth when an old man goes to
investigate. Some kind of
BLOB emerges & attacks him. The towns resident hoodlum finds him & takes
him to the hospital. This is where the thing runs rampant & starts killing people off. It engulfs people &
covers them completely. As it does this it gets bigger & bigger & stronger & stronger. The government is
once again sent in to destroy the creature, but it is the towns hoodlum & school cheerleader who eventually
figure out how to stop the creature. The death scenes are a lot more gorier that the original & a lot more
violent. This is one of the remakes that actually is done right. The film features a young Shawnee Smith
from the
SAW film series in one of her first movie roles! Check this movie out, but watch the original first!
